Festival of the almost 500-year-old Citizens' Shooting Association — July 17-20, 2026
The Citizens' Shooting Association Bad Laer from 1543 is one of the oldest shooting associations in the Osnabrück region — and one of the oldest in all of Lower Saxony. With almost five hundred years of club history, the Schützenfest carries a special weight of tradition: it is about preserving a custom that has older roots than the Kingdom of Hanover itself.
As tradition dictates, the Schützenfest takes place on the third weekend of July — in 2026 from Friday, July 17, to Monday, July 20. Four days of shooting club life in the Kneipp spa town at the southern Teutoburg Forest.
The venue is the Schützenplatz Auf dem Blomberg 2 in 49196 Bad Laer. The Blomberg is a prominent hill overlooking the Laer Valley — a scenically attractive location for a traditional festival with such a long history.
As is customary for Citizens' Shooting Festivals in the Teutoburg Forest, the festival includes a clear traditional program: bird shooting, competition for the king, proclamation of the new royal couple, festive parade through the spa town, royal dinner, dance evening with live band, morning pint (Frühschoppen), and family day. Fanfare and marching bands accompany the traditional elements.
Bad Laer is a state-recognized Kneipp spa and is nestled at the southern edge of the Teutoburg Forest. The town connects a significant part of its identity with the Schützenfest — a celebration that intertwines the citizenry, the association, and the spa town.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the association before the festival. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
