Anniversary weekend of the subcultural community center on Rügen
If you associate Rügen with chalk cliffs, spa architecture, and herring salad, you're missing an important facet of the island: the independent scene around La Grange e.V.. The association sees itself as an "open place for art, culture, and encounters," founded by a group of young islanders who occupied the former utility building at Gingster Chaussee 6 on the western outskirts of Bergen auf Rügen in 2006 and gradually transformed it into a vibrant cultural center. Today, La Grange is one of the few places in Vorpommern-Rügen where concerts outside the mainstream, workshops, readings, and exhibitions take place year-round.
The tongue-in-cheek festival name plays on the address "Gingster Chaussee" – the postal address becomes a subcultural statement. This event series has accompanied La Grange since its early years and stands for the self-image the association claims: "Culture is more than entertainment. It is social practice, artistic research, and a driver of social development." In June 2026, the 20th birthday will be celebrated with an anniversary weekend – three days between the main stage, workshop rooms, and the outdoor area, featuring bands, sound art, living room concerts, and a specially curated exhibition.
La Grange is the home base for several recurring formats: Fette Ente im Krokoteich in September, the Living Room Concerts series for emerging musicians, the sound art and landscape projects under the title Inselklang, as well as regular street art exhibitions, graffiti workshops, fire shows, and film screenings. Gangster Chaussee for the 20th anniversary bundles these strands into a single weekend, making tangible what the association stands for.
Bergen auf Rügen, with a population of just over 13,000, is the island's largest town and the district capital of Vorpommern-Rügen. While the Baltic Sea resorts of Binz, Sellin, and Göhren attract classic summer tourism, an off-scene has established itself around La Grange, active year-round. For a festival weekend, Bergen can be perfectly combined with day trips to Königsstuhl in Jasmund National Park, Jagdschloss Granitz, or the harbor district of Sassnitz – arrival by train is direct to Bergen auf Rügen.
For its 20th anniversary, La Grange opens its grounds on the western edge of Bergen auf Rügen for an extended weekend. Bands, visual artists, companions from two decades of the association's history, and guests from the North German independent scene will gather on the main stage, in the workshop rooms, and in the outdoor area.
The exhibition "Being in the World" opens as early as June 1st, 2026, and will accompany the festival beyond the weekend. It brings together works by artists who have worked, exhibited, or led workshops at La Grange over the years.
The complete program with band announcements, workshop schedules, and admission prices will be published by La Grange e.V. on the association's website. Until then: Anyone who wants to experience the very special charm of La Grange – beyond tourist highlights and mainstream programming – should mark the weekend of June 5th to 7th, 2026.
As of Spring 2026, the following key points of the anniversary program are confirmed:
The detailed band lineup and workshop schedule will be announced by the organizer la-grange.de closer to the date. As La Grange traditionally focuses on Indie, Post-Rock, Folk, and Electronica bands, as well as sound art and street art formats, a similar mix can be expected.
Exact ticket prices and weekend passes will be published soon via la-grange.de and through advance sales by the association. Experience shows that La Grange's prices are moderate, with reduced tickets for members and students. Donations to support the non-profit association are welcome throughout the weekend.
