About Konzertsommer St. Marien

The concert summer of St. Marien Church Bergen transforms the largest church on the island of Rügen into a concert hall every Wednesday evening between June and September. The historical Grüneberg organ is the centerpiece, complemented by gospel choirs, brass ensembles, and a final concert with choir and orchestra. A reliable fixture in the cultural calendar of Bergen auf Rügen, supported by the parish and the Friends of St. Marien e.V.

A Church, An Organ, A Summer

The St. Marien Church Bergen is no ordinary village church: it is the oldest and largest church on the island of Rügen, with origins as a monastery building from the 12th century, Romanesque roots, and exceptionally rich furnishings for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Inside stands an instrument around which the entire concert series revolves: the Grüneberg organ, with 28 registers, the largest organ on the island, built in 1909 by Barnim Grüneberg in Stettin. If you want to get to know Rügen, it's worth making a detour to Marktstraße on a Wednesday evening for a few days.

The Rhythm: Wednesday, 8 PM

The concert summer is a weekly series: every Wednesday at 8 PM, from early June to mid-September. The program follows a proven dramaturgy: organ recitals alternating with gospel choirs, brass ensembles, and chamber music formats, framed by an opening and a festive closing concert. The selection of soloists extends beyond the island's borders – in 2026, for example, Linda Sítková from Prague, Rainer Oster from Saarbrücken, and Tobias Brommann from the Berlin Philharmonic will come to Bergen.

More Than Tourism

The series is explicitly not a tourist side program, but a concert series for the island's residents – tourists are welcome, but not the primary target audience. The organizer is the Evangelical Parish of Bergen, supported by the Friends of St. Marien e.V., which co-finances the renovation of the church and organ through donations. Artistic director: Kantor Frank Thomas, who himself is regularly featured in the program – whether on the harpsichord, at the podium of a brass ensemble, or as conductor of the choir.

Bergen auf Rügen – District Capital with a Sonic History

Bergen auf Rügen is the district capital of Vorpommern-Rügen and, with around 13,000 inhabitants, the largest municipality on the island. Visitors attending the concert can explore the market square, the city museum, and the monastery grounds in 15 minutes, dine in one of the local restaurants before the concert, and linger afterwards in the parish restaurant – traditionally, there are summer evening events with wine and snacks. For overnight stays, Putbus, Sassnitz, or the nearby Baltic Sea resort of Binz are also worthwhile.
