About SPIELFELD Rostock

With SPIELFELD, the Volkstheater Rostock dedicates its own festival to theatre for young audiences. Over several weeks from May to July, the house's youngest festival format focuses on children's, youth, and family theatre. The programme includes premieres, repertoire pieces, family concerts, and participatory workshops — all productions are clearly marked with age recommendations from 5 to 18 years. The in-house theatre clubs present their own productions in the Ateliertheater, supplemented by guest performances from schools and theatre groups from the city and region. SPIELFELD is an invitation to watch, participate, and play yourself.

A Festival for Young Audiences

SPIELFELD is the youngest festival format of the Volkstheater Rostock and is entirely dedicated to theatre for young audiences. Over several weeks from May to July, the theatre transforms its stages into a place where children, adolescents, and families experience theatre — and become active themselves.

Premieres and Repertoire

The opening features premieres: »Tschick« for ages 13+, a road opera by Ludger Vollmer based on the young adult novel by Wolfgang Herrndorf, and »Wolf« for ages 10+, a stage adaptation of the children's book by Saša Stanišić, which tells the story of bullying and friendship at a summer camp. The premieres are complemented by repertoire pieces and family concerts for various age groups.

Participate and Play Yourself

SPIELFELD is more than just a festival for spectators. The Ateliertheater becomes the stage for the Volkstheater's theatre clubs: children, adolescents, and young adults showcase what they have developed over the season. In addition to the in-house groups, students from the city and region also perform their own theatre pieces. Workshops such as the »Spielraum« for adults or a Graffiti Jam invite active participation.

Venues of the Volkstheater

The festival uses several venues of the Volkstheater Rostock — from the Großen Haus to the Ateliertheater and the forecourt of the theatre, and events even take place at the Zoo Rostock. This diversity of venues makes SPIELFELD a journey through the theatre landscape of the Hanseatic city.

SPIELFELD Rostock — edition 2026

The fourth edition of the SPIELFELD festival runs from May 2 to July 12, 2026. The opening features the premieres »Tschick« (ages 13+) and »Wolf« (ages 10+). In addition, there are repertoire pieces, family concerts, workshops, and original productions by the theatre clubs in the Ateliertheater.

From May 2 to July 12, 2026, the fourth edition of the SPIELFELD festival will take place at the Volkstheater Rostock. For several weeks, the festival focuses on theatre for children, adolescents, and families. The opening features two premieres, complemented by repertoire pieces, family concerts, and participatory formats. The Ateliertheater will host original productions by the house's theatre clubs as well as by school groups from the city and region.
