On the second Sunday in October, the Fichtelgebirgsverein Weidenberg celebrates its traditional Hütten-Kirchweih (hut festival) at the Gänskopfhütte above Eckartsreuth. At an altitude of 743 meters on the southern edge of the Fichtelgebirge, hikers, locals, and friends of the club gather for a rustic mountain hut celebration with snacks, beer, and music. The hut is only accessible via a 1.5 km footpath – part of the experience. In Kirchenpingarten, the classic village Kirchweih (Allerweltskerwa) follows a week later.

On Sunday, October 11, 2026 – the second Sunday in October – the Fichtelgebirgsverein Weidenberg will again host its Hütten-Kirchweih at the Gänskopfhütte above Eckartsreuth. Snacks, Franconian beer, and cakes await hikers at an altitude of 743 meters – access only on foot via the hut path.

The second Sunday in October is traditionally dedicated to the Gänskopfhütten-Kerwa by the Fichtelgebirgsverein. In mostly pleasant autumn weather, families, regular guests, and day-trippers from the Bayreuth area hike up the 1.5 km hut path and celebrate Kirchweih there.

The hut is open on Kirchweih Sunday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The club team volunteers to manage the catering. They offer classic Franconian snacks, sausages, homemade cakes, coffee, and draft beer. Weather permitting, service is also available on the covered terrace.

Getting There

From Bayreuth via the B22 or coming from Weidenberg/Pegnitz. Parking lot north of Eckartsreuth (Kirchenpingarten). From there, a 1.5 km walk to the hut. Car access directly to the hut is not possible. Sturdy footwear recommended.

Admission

Free. Food and drinks available on site (snacks, beer, cakes). Sat 11:00 AM until dusk, Sun 10:00 AM–6:00 PM.

Mountain Kirchweih with Tradition

The Gänskopfhütte on the southern edge of the Fichtelgebirge was built in 1970/71 by the Fichtelgebirgsverein Weidenberg and has since been a popular meeting point for hikers and mountain bikers in the Bayreuth area. Once a year, on the second Sunday in October, the traditional Hüttenkirchweih is celebrated here – firmly anchored in the annual festival calendar of the municipality of Kirchenpingarten.

A Kirchweih on Foot

Anyone who wants to join the celebration has to move: A good 1.5 km hiking trail leads from the parking lot north of Eckartsreuth to the hut. Arrival and departure by car directly to the hut are not possible – that's part of the charm of the mountain Kirchweih. Up top, snacks, sausages, homemade cakes, Franconian beer, and special delicacies await on Kirchweih Sunday.

Location in the Fichtelgebirge

The Gänskopfhütte is located at 743 m altitude in the municipality of Kirchenpingarten (Bayreuth district, Upper Franconia). A dense network of hiking and cycling trails leads around the Gänskopf. Enjoyable mountain bike tours connect the hut with the Bayreuther Haus, Fuchsendorf, and the Tauritzmühle.

Double Kirchweih Tradition in Kirchenpingarten

The Gänskopfhütten-Kirchweih (2nd Sunday in October) is part of a double Kirchweih tradition: A week later, on the 3rd Sunday in October, the Allerweltskerwa in the village center of Kirchenpingarten follows. Both are part of the municipality's fixed event calendar.
