Kloster Windberg
Kloster Windberg is a Premonstratensian abbey founded in 1140 and is considered one of the oldest and most significant monastery complexes in Lower Bavaria. It is located in the municipality of Windberg, idyllically situated on a hill above the Bogenbach valley in the district of Straubing-Bogen, at the transition from the Danube valley to the Bavarian Forest. The monastery church of St. Mary's Ascension is an originally Romanesque, later Baroque structure and houses an important pipe organ instrument.
Four Concerts per Year
The Premonstratensian Abbey of Windberg maintains a vibrant church music tradition. It hosts four concerts per year: an Advent concert in December, a Spring concert in March, the Summer concert in July, and an Autumn concert in November. This series is aimed at music lovers from the entire Bavarian Forest and Danube Valley region and offers a welcome opportunity to experience the historic monastery organ.
Joachim Schreiber at the Organ
The summer concert on July 12, 2026, will be performed by organist Joachim Schreiber. The program is titled »Music from Friends for Friends« and focuses on personally selected works from the artist's repertoire. Pieces from the South German Baroque (Pachelbel, Muffat, Bach), the South German Classical school (Albrechtsberger, Eberlin), and possibly Romantic and modern works are expected. The exact program order will be distributed as a program booklet at the concert box office.
The Monastery Church as a Sound Space
With its high vaults, Baroque interior, and special acoustics, the monastery church offers an extraordinary sound space for organ music. The stucco and fresco decoration from the 18th century, the Romanesque architectural elements on the west facade, and the central location of the main organ on the west gallery make the monastery concert an experience for the eyes, ears, and spirit. Concert visitors can visit the monastery church before the start.
Spirituality and Concert
The concert is part of the spiritual life of the active Premonstratensian community, which still inhabits the monastery today and opens it for educational programs, retreats, hospitality, and school (Realschule Windberg). Those attending the concert can also participate in a prayer or divine office of the monks after prior arrangement – a unique encounter with lived monastic tradition in the Lower Bavarian hill country.
