Enjoyment and family festival centered around local fish in the Franconian Lake District
The Fränkisches Seenland Fischerfest is one of Middle Franconia's most visited autumn festivals. The venue is the Wald am Altmühlsee festival grounds – an area directly on the southern shore of the lake, which is nearly 450 hectares in size and one of Bavaria's largest bodies of water. The festival was launched in 2011 by the Wald-Streudorf local heritage association to mark the 25th anniversary of the Altmühlsee; the town of Gunzenhausen now organizes the event in cooperation with the Middle Franconian Fishing Association (Fischereiverband Mittelfranken e.V.).
The culinary focus is on local fish from the lakes, ponds, streams, and rivers of Middle Franconia: carp, pike-perch, pike, trout, char, and other species are smoked, grilled, and fried – as classic fish sandwiches, fish fillets, fish burgers, or "fish chips." Carp from traditional pond farming (especially Franconian carp farming in the Aischgrund and Altmühltal regions, which has shaped the diet for centuries) plays a prominent role. In addition, there are organic products, regional specialties, and drinks from the Franconian Lake District.
The festival aims to be a family-friendly and informative event: face painting, crafts, an "air aquarium" attraction, a fishing flea market, as well as guided fishing demonstrations and information on water quality and fishery operations are part of the offerings. Live music (shanty choir, Lissyfandermichl, village folk music) and a festival tent with a daily changing program round off the weekend.
Gunzenhausen, with around 17,000 inhabitants, is the administrative seat of the Altmühlsee collective municipality and the center of the Franconian Lake District in the Middle Franconian district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen (Bavaria).
In 2026, the Fränkisches Seenland Fischerfest will be celebrated again – as a permanent fixture of the Altmühlsee event calendar, which the town of Gunzenhausen has announced for 2026 with a "colorful and varied program." The exact date – traditionally the second weekend of October – will be communicated by the town and the Middle Franconian Fishing Association in the course of the year.
The format follows the proven concept: local fish smoked, grilled, and fried in various variations, live music (including a shanty choir and regional bands), an extensive family program with craft activities, an air aquarium, and a fishing flea market, plus demonstrations by fishermen and information on water quality and pond farming.
The 2026 program will be updated on fischerfest.gunzenhausen.de.
Free admission. Food and drinks at the stalls at fair folk festival prices (fish sandwiches €5-7, burgers €8-10).
Gunzenhausen is located on the B466 federal highway and the Treuchtlingen–Pleinfeld–Nuremberg railway line, with its own train station. From the station to the Wald am Altmühlsee festival grounds, take a bus or taxi (approx. 5 km). By car, take the Pleinfeld exit of the A6 motorway or the A7 (Treuchtlingen exit). Parking is available at the festival grounds.
Admission is free. Food and drinks at the stalls are priced like at a folk festival (fish sandwiches approx. €5-7, fish burgers approx. €8-10).
Franconian Lake District carp is a culinary specialty that can be tried here in many variations. A combination with a bike tour or hike around the Altmühlsee is worthwhile – the circular route is about 12 km long.
