Commemorative event for the 81st anniversary of the liberation — April 19, 2026, 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM
On April 15, 1945, British troops liberated the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. What the liberators found were among the most harrowing images of the 20th century: tens of thousands dead, tens of thousands dying, a humanitarian catastrophe of immense proportions. Bergen-Belsen became a symbol of the National Socialist will to exterminate and a memorial to the responsibility of future generations. The annual commemoration keeps this legacy alive.
The 81st anniversary in 2026 takes place at a time when antisemitism, right-wing extremist violence, and historical revisionism are alarmingly on the rise. This makes the annual commemorative events at authentic historical sites all the more important. The Bergen-Belsen Memorial is such a place — it serves as a concrete, physical reminder of the crimes and their victims, not an abstract one.
The commemoration on April 19, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM, combines several elements: Welcome and opening speeches by the Lower Saxony Memorials Foundation and political representatives; contributions from survivors or relatives; wreath-laying ceremonies at the mass graves and memorial stones; religious and secular services; cultural contributions with music and readings. The program is organized by the Memorial's Directorate.
Embedded within the commemorative program is the Dutch National Day of Remembrance on May 4, 2026, which is traditionally also observed in Bergen-Belsen — many Dutch victims were murdered here. This Dutch-German commemorative event is an expression of the special connection between the Netherlands and the Memorial and strengthens the international dimension of remembrance.
The detailed program will be published by the Bergen-Belsen Memorial in advance. The structure follows the established key points:
