Open-air music festival on five stages around the Altmühlsee
The Altmühlsee in the Franconian Lake District (Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district) is already a magnet for water sports enthusiasts, cyclists, and day-trippers in the summer. On the day of the Altmühlsee Festival, it becomes the largest contiguous festival stage in Middle Franconia: live bands from the rock and rockabilly genres play simultaneously on five lake centers.
The highlight of the festival: instead of a fixed stage area, a shuttle bus and the excursion boat Betty connect the five venues. The 5-euro festival wristband allows unlimited use of both transport methods — a concept rarely found elsewhere in Germany.
For years, the festival has focused on rock and rockabilly — a core identity that also shapes the audience. Weekend tourists, families, and residents of the neighboring communities of Gunzenhausen, Muhr am See, and Pfofeld mingle amidst swinging, mod-style, and classic rocker looks.
The Altmühlsee is part of the Franconian Lake District — a system of artificially created lakes between the Altmühl and Brombachsee, established in the 1980s and now one of Bavaria's most popular recreational areas. The festival utilizes this geography like no other event in Middle Franconia.
The 2026 edition continues the successful multi-stage concept. The festival is organized by the Altmühlsee special-purpose association and, as always, takes place at the end of August. Kick-off on Saturday evening from 7:00 PM.
Additionally, there will be an afternoon pre-show from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM as part of the "Festival Special" at the Auszeithaus in Seezentrum Schlungenhof. The complete band lineup will be published by the organizer in the weeks leading up to the festival.
Further band confirmations and the exact stage program will be updated on altmuehlsee.de and on the Franconian Lake District event page.
Gunzenhausen is on the Nuremberg–Treuchtlingen–Augsburg railway line. By car, take the A6 (Lichtenau exit) and the B466. The festival shuttle starts from Gunzenhausen train station.
Free admission to all stages. Festival wristband for shuttle and Ferry Betty: 5 euros (available at each Seezentrum and at the Gunzenhausen Tourist Information).
Shuttle bus from Gunzenhausen train station starting at 6:50 PM, hourly. The excursion boat Betty runs between the venues.
