Open-air theatre on the historic Giechburg above Scheßlitz
Fränkischer Theatersommer e.V. is the State Theatre of Upper Franconia and one of the largest touring theatre companies in Germany. Every summer, the ensemble gives around 180 performances at approximately 70 venues in Upper and Middle Franconia. One of the most atmospheric is the Giechburg above Scheßlitz in the district of Bamberg.
The Giechburg was first mentioned in 1125 and, at over 500 metres above sea level, towers visibly over the Franconian Switzerland region. Inside, there is a performance hall for around 100 guests, a gallery in the tower, and a restaurant serving Franconian cuisine, homemade cakes, and an idyllic castle courtyard that serves as a beer garden. Theatre at this location combines acting with a historic backdrop and Franconian hospitality.
New productions for the 2026 season include the turbulent Western musical »Sterne über Cactus Creek«, the moving drama »Der Wunderheiler«, the sophisticated relationship play »Die Geliebte meines Mannes«, and the witty neighbourhood comedy »Was den Nachbarn neidisch macht«. In addition, there is the Franconian classic »Unkraut« by Fitzgerald Kusz and »Mann des Schicksals« loosely based on George Bernard Shaw, as well as audience favourites like the Loriot evening »Früher war mehr Lametta« and the musical »Wochenend und Sonnenschein«.
The Fränkischer Theatersommer brings professional theatre to the villages and small towns of the region, making culture accessible where there is otherwise no permanent theatre. The performances at the Giechburg are an integral part of the Upper Franconian cultural summer and attract audiences from the entire Bamberg district.
