The 2026 season of the Fränkischer Theatersommer brings open-air theatre back to the historic Giechburg near Scheßlitz. New productions include the turbulent Western musical »Sterne über Cactus Creek«, the moving drama »Der Wunderheiler«, the sophisticated relationship play »Die Geliebte meines Mannes«, and the witty neighbourhood comedy »Was den Nachbarn neidisch macht«. With »Unkraut« by Fitzgerald Kusz and »Mann des Schicksals« loosely based on G. B. Shaw, further highlights are on the programme. In total, the ensemble gives around 180 performances in the season at approximately 70 venues in Upper and Middle Franconia; which plays will be performed on which dates at the Giechburg can be seen in the programme at theatersommer.de.

Getting there
The Giechburg is located above Scheßlitz in the district of Bamberg, about 15 km northeast of Bamberg. By car, take the A70 (exit Scheßlitz) and follow Burgstraße up to the castle. Parking is available below the castle complex.

Fränkischer Theatersommer e.V. is the State Theatre of Upper Franconia and one of the largest touring theatre companies in Germany. Every summer, the ensemble gives around 180 performances at approximately 70 venues in Upper and Middle Franconia. One of the most atmospheric is the Giechburg above Scheßlitz in the district of Bamberg.
Giechburg Venue
The Giechburg was first mentioned in 1125 and, at over 500 metres above sea level, towers visibly over the Franconian Switzerland region. Inside, there is a performance hall for around 100 guests, a gallery in the tower, and a restaurant serving Franconian cuisine, homemade cakes, and an idyllic castle courtyard that serves as a beer garden. Theatre at this location combines acting with a historic backdrop and Franconian hospitality.

In addition, there is the Franconian classic »Unkraut« by Fitzgerald Kusz and »Mann des Schicksals« loosely based on George Bernard Shaw, as well as audience favourites like the Loriot evening »Früher war mehr Lametta« and the musical »Wochenend und Sonnenschein«.
