An entire season of traditional costume and forest festival culture in the Tegernsee Valley
The Waldfest is one of Upper Bavaria's most characteristic festival types: a festival in the forest, on a clearing, on an alpine meadow, or in a spa park. In the Tegernsee Valley — nestled between the Mangfall Mountains and the Bavarian Prealps, Miesbach district — the traditional costume, sports, and rifle clubs maintain this tradition with particular intensity.
Even though each festival has its own character, the proceedings follow a proven choreography:
In addition to the forest festivals, three major Seefeste (lake festivals) take place in the valley with illuminated boats, fireworks, and a program: Rottach-Egern (early July), Tegernsee (late July), and Bad Wiessee (mid-August). Added to this is the Festival of Lights in Gmund (late June) with around 1,200 candles set afloat on the lake at dusk, as well as the cattle drive (Almauftrieb) in Gut Kaltenbrunn (late June) — one of the region's most popular traditional costume festivals.
Practically every forest festival at Lake Tegern serves beer from the traditional Tegernsee brewery, located in the ducal Bräustüberl right next to the castle. The beer connects all the festivals — and makes the Tegernsee Valley one of Upper Bavaria's most concentrated areas for forest festivals.
The 2026 forest festival season is spread over eight to ten dates between mid-June and early August. The festivals are organized by sports, traditional costume, and rifle clubs from the four Tegernsee communities: Kreuth, Bad Wiessee, Tegernsee, and Rottach-Egern. In addition, there are the major lake festivals in Rottach-Egern (early July), Tegernsee (late July), and Bad Wiessee (mid-August).
Updated dates and possible weather-related alternative dates can be found on the respective club websites and at bachmair-weissach.com.
In case of bad weather, many clubs will move to alternative dates or a festival hall. Specific bands, music groups, and daily programs are published by the respective clubs shortly before the festival.
The Tegernsee Valley is located about 50 km south of Munich in the Miesbach district. Take the Bayerische Oberlandbahn (BOB) from Munich Central Station for about an hour to Tegernsee or Rottach-Egern. By car, take the A8 and the B307.
Most forest festivals are free to enter. Food and drinks (beer, meals) are paid for directly on site.
In case of bad weather, most clubs relocate to a hall or postpone to an alternative date. You can find exact dates and alternative options on the respective clubs' websites and on bachmair-weissach.com.
