Traditional lake festival on Lake Tegern with boat jousting and grand fireworks
The Tegernsee lake festivals are one of the most concentrated festival series in Upper Bavaria: Each year in July, the lake festivals in Tegernsee and Rottach-Egern kick things off, followed by Gmund and finally Bad Wiessee as the grand finale in mid-August. Bad Wiessee, with just under 5,000 inhabitants and located on the western shore of Lake Tegern in the Upper Bavarian district of Miesbach in the state of Bavaria, invites you to its lake festival on Friday, August 14, 2026. Backup dates in case of bad weather: August 15 or 16, 2026.
The highlight of the lake festival is the Schifferstechen (boat jousting), an old folk festival game with a long tradition around Lake Tegern. Two teams compete against each other on the waters of Lake Tegern in rowing boats, equipped with long poles — the goal is to push the opponent into the water. The boat jousting begins at 7:00 PM in the Wiesseer Bucht, and this athletic competition attracts thousands of spectators along the lake promenade.
Another hallmark of the Bad Wiessee lake festival is the festival stage on a floating raft carrying traditional costume wearers. Brass bands play from the raft, and traditional costume dances are performed — this is also a Tegernsee peculiarity that makes the festival unmistakable. Clubs, traditional costume groups, and local sports clubs present themselves along the promenade.
In the afternoon, there is a varied children's program: face painting, bouncy castle, craft stations, and small games. For parents, there is festival tent catering with Upper Bavarian specialties, festival beer (Tegernseer Bräu), Steckerlfisch (grilled fish on a stick), and pretzels available. The atmosphere in the Wiesseer Bucht is familiar and traditional — many families from Bad Wiessee and the Tegernsee region bring their own picnic blankets.
The event concludes with fireworks accompanied by music around 10:15 PM over the Wiesseer Bucht. The semi-circular bay offers excellent views of the pyro show from almost any location along the lake promenade. With the surrounding mountains — Wallberg, Hirschberg, Setzberg — as a backdrop, the Bad Wiessee lake festival fireworks are among the most beautiful pyro shows in Upper Bavaria.
The Seefest Bad Wiessee 2026 once again marks the end of the Tegernsee lake festival season. The festival grounds are the promenade in the Wiesseer Bucht. From 4:00 PM, the colorful program attracts thousands of visitors from the Tegernsee region and Munich. The organizer is the municipality of Bad Wiessee.
