Season opener of the Tegernsee Volksfeste with Fingerhakl Championship
Volksfest Gmund opens the season of the three major Tegernsee Volksfeste every spring (Gmund in May, Tegernsee in July, Bad Wiessee in August). After a break in 2025 (no festival caterer found), the festival returns in full swing in 2026 to the Volksfestplatz on Max-Obermayer-Straße.
The festival caterer is Fahrenschon GmbH & Co KG, which organizes the Bavarian festival operations in the large beer tent with a covered beer garden. The beer supplier is Herzogliche Brauerei Tegernsee (Brauhaus Tegernsee), whose Helles and Festbier are served at the Volksfest. Opening hours are daily from 11:00 AM to 10:30 PM without a rest day.
The sporting and folkloric highlight is the 70th Bavarian Championship in Fingerhakeln (arm wrestling with fingers) on Whit Monday (referring to the festival Sunday event, traditionally the last day of the festival). In Fingerhakeln, two men try to pull each other across a table by hooking their middle fingers with a leather strap – a very traditional Upper Bavarian competition.
Volksfest Gmund covers the full spectrum of Bavarian folk festival culture: Opening with a brass band concert, tapping of the first beer keg by Mayor Alfons Besel, and free beer from the Tegernsee brewery. During the five festival days, there are senior afternoons, family days with reduced prices for rides, Schafkopf tournaments, children's activities, and Punch and Judy shows. The festival concludes with the Fingerhakeln competition and a final lunch.
Gmund am Tegernsee is located on the northern shore of Lake Tegernsee and at the beginning of the Mangfall river, which flows out of the lake towards the Mangfall valley. The municipality belongs to the Miesbach district (AGS 09182) and is accessible via the A8 (Salzburg Autobahn) and B318 in about 45 minutes from Munich.
After a break in 2025, Volksfest Gmund returns in full swing in 2026. Five festival days from May 6th to 10th, without a rest day, at Volksfestplatz Gmund (Max-Obermayer-Straße). Opening with a brass band concert in front of the town hall, beer tapping by Mayor Alfons Besel, and free beer from the Tegernsee brewery.
The program spreads classic Bavarian folk festival elements over the five days: Senior afternoon on Thursday, family day with reduced prices on Friday, Schafkopf tournament on Saturday, children's fairy tale hour and Punch and Judy show on Saturday, and on the festival Sunday, the 70th Bavarian Championship in Fingerhakeln at 11:00 AM.
