Maritime weekend with Hamburg market criers in the Black Forest
The "Hamburger Fischmarkt auf Tour" is a touring format that brings the maritime flair of the famous Hamburg Fish Market in St. Pauli (Sunday mornings, since 1703) to other German cities. From May 9 to 10, 2026, the tour stops in Schwenningen — on the Muslenplatz, the central square of Schwenningen's town center. For two days, the Black Forest atmosphere combines with Hamburg harbor flair.
The hallmark of the Hamburg Fish Market are the market criers — a special professional group of theatrically gifted salespeople who use loud voices, witty rhymes, and exuberant sales rituals to sell fish, cheese, fruit, and eels to the public. "Aale-Dieter," "Bananen-Fred," and their colleagues are integral parts of Hamburg's way of life — on tour, they bring this tradition to southern Germany.
North German specialties dominate the culinary offerings: smoked fish in many varieties (eel, trout, mackerel, salmon), Hamburg eel soup, classic fish rolls with Bismarck herring, marinated herring, fried fish, or matjes, crab sandwiches with North Sea crabs, and of course fresh fish to take home — packed for the cooler.
On Sunday, May 10, 2026, the Schwenningen town center will also be open for shopping — the stores on Muslenplatz and Marktstraße will open their doors for a stroll and shopping day. Thus, the fish market combines with a relaxed shopping Sunday in the city center.
Until its merger in 1972, Schwenningen was an independent city. Today, it is one of the two town centers of Villingen-Schwenningen and the eastern of the two. The Muslenplatz is the center of Schwenningen life — with a fountain, cafés, and Marktstraße as the main shopping street.
