Traditional Fishermen's Festival on the Dike of the Probstei Baltic Coast
The Fischerfest Stein-Wendtorf is one of the classic fishermen's festivals on the Schleswig-Holstein Baltic coast. The venue is the dike right by the Bojenfeld in the seaside resort of Stein — precisely at the transition between beach, harbour, and village where the Probstei fishery has its roots. The organiser is the Stein-Wendtorf Fishermen's Cooperative, in close collaboration with the Stein-Wendtorf Tourist Service, the Volunteer Fire Brigade, and the local sports club.
The culinary offering is its hallmark: freshly caught and smoked fish directly from the cooperative's fishermen, plus fried fish in the pan, fish rolls with matjes, Bismarck herring, or smoked salmon. The offering is supplemented by local specialities and drinks. The concept has remained unchanged for decades — quality over modernism.
What makes the Fischerfest a true festival is the combination of culinary delights and programme: live music directly on the dike (shanty, singer-songwriters, small bands), a meeting point for Probstei clubs, and social zones for holidaymakers and locals. The atmosphere is relaxed and Northern German — plastic benches, small talk, seagulls.
Stein is located in the Plön district in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, directly on the Kiel Fjord — a recognised health resort with around 850 inhabitants, almost 800 years of history, and a distinctive pier (the 'Steiner Mole') in the harbour. The Probstei, that fertile region between Kiel and Hohwacht Bay, traditionally thrives on the interplay of agriculture, tourism, and fishing. The municipality of Stein, together with Wendtorf, forms the twin centre of this tradition; the Fishermen's Cooperative carries it into the 21st century. Throughout the year, the municipality organises several seasonal festivals — Fischerfest, Molenfest, and Deichfest are part of the regular programme.
The 2026 edition opens on Saturday, July 11th, at 2:30 PM on the dike at the Bojenfeld in Stein. As in previous years, the Stein-Wendtorf Fishermen's Cooperative is the organiser, supported by the Tourist Service, the Volunteer Fire Brigade, and the local sports club.
On the tables: freshly caught and smoked fish directly from the cooperative members, plus fried fish, fish rolls, and Northern German specialities. On the music stage, small bands and singer-songwriters alternate with shanty choirs. The festival traditionally ends in the late evening with the sunset over the Kiel Fjord.
