49th Edition of Erkelenz's Largest City Festival
The Lambertusmarkt is the city festival of Erkelenz – and with 49 years of tradition, one of the oldest and largest city festivals in the Heinsberg district. Named after the city's patron saint St. Lambertus, the market traditionally takes place around Pentecost and fills the city center with a market, funfair, music, and a Volksfest (public festival) atmosphere for five days.
180 Market Stalls Around the Old Town Hall
With over 180 market stalls, the Lambertusmarkt covers a huge range. In the market area around the historic Old Town Hall, vendors from all over North Rhine-Westphalia and beyond offer their goods: household items, textiles, handicrafts, tools, toys, jewelry. Alongside this, culinary delights from around the world – from Spanish Churros to Greek specialties, Italian pizza, regional bratwurst, to cocktail bars and cocktail trucks.
Funfair Area in the Castle District
Parallel to the market, a full-fledged funfair operates in close proximity to the Erkelenz castle area. Carousels, roller coasters, Ferris wheel, dodgems, showman stalls, snack stands – the entire funfair spectrum. Families and young people will get their money's worth here.
Free Admission and Free Stage Music
The main stage features a free stage program: cover bands, local acts, interactive shows. The entire Lambertusmarkt is freely accessible – only the individual funfair attractions are paid for separately.
Fireworks on Friday
The highlight of the first half of the festival week is the grand fireworks display on Friday. The people of Erkelenz and their guests gather in the park around the castle to marvel at the light spectacle. A tradition that mobilizes thousands of spectators every year.
Family Day on Monday and Festive Closing Parade
Monday is the traditional Family Day with reduced ride prices at the funfair and special family activities. The event concludes with a ceremonial closing parade featuring the mayor, dignitaries, and showmen.
Erkelenz in the Heinsberg District
Erkelenz is located in the westernmost part of North Rhine-Westphalia, in the Heinsberg district, near the Dutch border. With just under 45,000 inhabitants, it is the economic center of the southern region and shapes the identity of the agricultural and industrial city between Aachen, Mönchengladbach, and Düsseldorf. The Lambertusmarkt is THE identification event for the people of Erkelenz – those who grew up here have their memories of it.
Pentecost Date – Always Around June 7th
The Lambertusmarkt traditionally coincides with the Pentecost weekend, or the associated long weekend. In 2026, this is from Thursday, June 4th to Monday, June 8th – five days of Pentecost market with a long weekend for families and day visitors.
