Gastronomy festival with Sunday shopping in the city center
The Culinary Meeting is one of the established city festivals in Erkelenz and has been a fixed part of the city center's event program for years. The organizer is the Gewerbering Erkelenz e.V. (Erkelenz Business Association), which brings together local restaurants, cafés, and snack bars – with the aim of showcasing the diversity of Erkelenz's gastronomy scene in one central location.
The venue is the historic market square around Erkelenz's Old Town Hall. Stands, stalls, and bistro furniture transform the square into an open-air gastronomic mile. The selection ranges from regional specialties such as Heinsberg sausage or Rhenish Sauerbraten to Mediterranean classics and creative small bites from the city center restaurants. Live music and ambient atmosphere provide the fitting setting.
The Culinary Meeting traditionally coincides with a Sunday shopping day: Erkelenz retailers open their doors from 1 PM to 6 PM. The event thus combines culinary enjoyment and shopping – a proven concept that attracts families from the Heinsberg district, neighboring cities like Mönchengladbach and Heinsberg, and the area around Roermond in the Netherlands.
With around 44,000 inhabitants, Erkelenz is the largest town in the Heinsberg district, located between Mönchengladbach and Roermond/NL. In recent years, the town has received much attention due to structural changes in the Rhenish lignite mining area (Garzweiler open-cast mine) – some districts had to be relocated. The city center with the market, the Old Town Hall (landmark), and St. Lambertus Church has been little affected by the structural changes and retains its historical charm.
The Gewerbering promotes the day as a "Sunday full of taste, atmosphere, and joie de vivre." Indeed, the Culinary Meeting is one of the most relaxed events in the Erkelenz calendar: no entrance queues, freely accessible, with short distances between the market square, the main street, and the surrounding cafés.
The 2026 edition takes place on the last Sunday of September, combined with the Sunday shopping in the city center. Restaurants, cafés, and snack stands present their specialties on the market square around the Old Town Hall.
The exact list of participating restaurants and the musical program will be announced shortly before the date on gewerbering-erkelenz.de.
