Erkelenz — the largest town in the west of the Heinsberg district

Erkelenz, with around 45,000 inhabitants, is the largest town in the west of the Heinsberg district, located between Mönchengladbach and Aachen. Historically a stronghold of agriculture, then heavily shaped by the Garzweiler open-cast mine (several districts had to make way for coal), Erkelenz is now a city in transition. The annual Christmas market — officially called Adventsdorf (Advent Village) — is one of the most important cultural identity builders and attracts thousands of visitors every year.

The Market Square at the Old Town Hall

The Adventsdorf is set up on the central Marktplatz am Alten Rathaus (Market Square at the Old Town Hall) — the historic city center with the classic Lower Rhine brick town hall dating from the 16th century. This backdrop, complemented by the St. Lambertus parish church in the background, creates the ideal atmosphere for a pre-Christmas market.

Weatherproof — A Special Feature

The Adventsdorf has an important special feature: a weatherproof covered seating area. Unlike many open-air Christmas markets where rain can spoil the visit, in Erkelenz you can sit outside and enjoy yourself even in bad weather. This investment makes the market attractive even in uncertain Lower Rhine winters.

Long Season — Nov 19 to Dec 23

Another special feature: The season is exceptionally long. From November 19 (weeks before the 1st Advent) to December 23 (the day before Christmas Eve) — about five weeks of market operation. This is significantly longer than the average 3-4 weeks of many smaller markets and makes the Adventsdorf one of the most extensive events in the region.

Partnership with Iwents Agency

For several years, the Adventsdorf has been organized in partnership with the Iwents Event Agency. The cooperation agreement runs until at least 2028 — giving the city of Erkelenz long-term planning security and a continuous program.
