Village fair with football and marquee in the northern Saarland
When the district championships of the Saarland Football Associations are over in midsummer, another game begins in the Weiselbergstadion: the village fair (Kirmes). For three days, FC "Oster 20" Oberkirchen, one of the oldest sports clubs in the northern Saarland (founded in 1920), organizes a classic Saarland village festival in its stadium. The stands, clubhouse, and marquee merge into a convivial unit for a weekend.
The concept has remained almost unchanged over the decades — and that's exactly what makes it appealing. On Saturdays, the first football matches of the season take place, often with local derbies of SG Oberkirchen/Grügelborn against surrounding clubs like FC Freisen. Afterwards, the marquee fills up; the tapping of the first keg is more tradition than spectacle. Sunday and Monday follow with morning pint, lunch (schnitzel and vegetarian options), live music, and dancing.
Oberkirchen is a district of the municipality of Freisen, located at the foot of the Weiselberg — one of the most striking natural monuments in the northern Saarland with its volcanic columns. The name "Weiselbergstadion" refers to this location. Visitors arriving for the Kirmes weekend often combine the festival with a hike up the Weiselberg.
The Kirmes is one of the most important social events of the year in Oberkirchen. The entire club, from youth teams to senior bands, is involved. Revenue flows into the club's activities, especially youth development. Admission is free.
Food and drinks are available throughout. Those who want to eat schnitzel should book in advance through the board or catering. Otherwise, there are grilled sausages, steaks, fries, and of course, beer and wine from the region.
The dates for the Oberkirchen Kirmes have followed the third weekend in August for decades. In 2026, the festival falls on August 20 to 22 (Thursday to Saturday). The exact program schedule is traditionally published a few weeks before the event on the club's website and in the local press.
The final program for 2026 will be published before the Kirmes begins on vereinsplatz-wnd.de and the club's website.
Free admission. Schnitzel lunch to be pre-ordered via the board.
