Tips

Sturdy footwear – forest floor, clearings, sometimes uneven terrain. Sun protection in sunny weather, evenings can be cool in May: bring a jacket. Arriving early is worthwhile: combine with a zoo visit in the park.

Medieval and Wildlife Park – An Unusual Combination

The Medieval Spring Market Freisen is one of the most charming events of its kind in Saarland because it chooses a wildlife park as its stage. Directly between the enclosures of fallow deer, wild boar, wolves, and lynx, organizers MB Historische Eventplanung set up a historically inspired camp with market stalls, show booths, and a tournament area. You wander through the wildlife park, see animals – and then suddenly a clearing full of medieval figures opens up.

Three Days of Full Program

Live music by medieval minstrels, fascinating juggling, rousing dances, knight tournaments with courage and skill, show fights, camp life with real craftswomen and craftsmen – the program spans three days. Blacksmiths show how a sword is made, potters work on the wheel, leatherworkers cut straps, bow makers bend ash staves. At the market stalls, you'll find historical and handmade items, from drinking horns and robes to real parchment documents.

Culinary Delights from the Era

The food fits the setting: freshly baked Baumstriezel over open embers, crêpes, waffles, homemade wild boar sausages from the wildlife park itself, dark bread, stews from the cauldron, accompanied by mead, beer from clay mugs, and hot spiced wine against the May chill. The food is part of the show – no "burger in medieval garb," but atmospheric camp life.

Family Program

Children love the market: archery, wooden sword workshops, storytellers, and playing in the camp. Combined with a tour of the Freisen Wildlife Park, admission becomes an all-day event. Those planning a relaxed family outing in Saarland will find a rare combination of educational experience (wildlife park) and fantasy world (market) here.

Freisen in the St. Wendel District

Freisen is located in the northern Saarland, in the St. Wendel district, on the border with Rhineland-Palatinate. The region is pure low mountain range – rolling hills, mixed forests, small villages. The Freisen Wildlife Park, with its over 100 hectares and more than 30 animal species, is one of Saarland's best-known family attractions. The spring market specifically leverages this strength.
