Asweiler – right in the heart of the St. Wendel district
Asweiler is one of the northernmost districts of the municipality of Freisen in the St. Wendel district. A few hundred inhabitants, wide fields, rolling hills, and proximity to the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park: Asweiler is located in the middle of one of the most rural and tranquil corners of the Saarland. That's precisely why the Kirmes here is a special event – it is the festival of the year for the village community.
Three Days of Village Festival Atmosphere
The Kirmes Asweiler-Eitzweiler traditionally takes place around the last weekend in September, starting on Friday (often with an opening evening in a festival hall or tent) and ending on Sunday or Monday afternoon. The program is classic:
- Festival tent with live music – usually regional cover bands and party bands
- Food stalls with traditional Saarland home cooking (Lyoner sausage, bratwurst, fries, Schwenker barbecue)
- Draught beer from Saarland breweries (Karlsberg, Bruch)
- Children's area with small carousels and rides
- Community involvement – fire brigade, music club, sports club
A True Village Community
What distinguishes the Asweiler Kirmes from commercialized folk festivals is its deep roots in the village community. The local association, clubs, and volunteers from the village organize the festival – not an external showman corporation. Anyone who wants to experience the authentic Saarland, away from the big cities and tourist magnets, will find it here.
In the St. Wendel District
Asweiler is located in the so-called St. Wendeler Land, a tourist region that promotes nature, hiking opportunities, and a rural way of life. The Kirmes is a good reason for a weekend trip: hike in the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park (border area) during the day, and enjoy the festival tent atmosphere in Asweiler in the evening.
