Mainfränkische Kirchweih with Weißwurst breakfast and flea market
The Kirchweih ("Kerwa") is one of the oldest and most stable festival traditions in Franconia. It dates back to the annual commemoration of the consecration of the local church but has long since developed into a village and civic festival that combines community life and customs. In Winterhausen, a market town in the district of Würzburg (AGS 09679) directly on the Main, the Kerwa is a fixed date in the annual calendar.
The Kirchweih in Winterhausen is organized by the Karnevalclub Kümmeltürken Winterhausen (KCK) – with an unusual name, as Winterhausen connects its Kerwa festivals with the local carnival tradition – as well as the Volunteer Fire Brigade Winterhausen. Both associations shape the program and take care of the organization surrounding the festive ceremony and the Weißwurst breakfast.
Traditionally, the festival day begins on Sunday morning with a Weißwurst breakfast, which is combined with a flea market in the town center. Afterwards, the festive church service takes place. Throughout the day, performances by local music groups and catering by the associations complement the events. According to long-standing tradition, the date is the first Sunday in September – in 2024 it was September 1st, in 2025 it will be September 7th.
Winterhausen is a market town on the western bank of the Main between Würzburg and Ochsenfurt. The historically characterized town center, the Main bridge, and the train station on the Würzburg – Treuchtlingen line shape the townscape. The Kirchweih is part of the Mainfränkische festival culture, which brings together a different town along the Main every weekend.
The Kirchweih in Winterhausen follows a fixed date: the first Sunday in September. For 2026, this date falls on September 6, 2026. As in previous years, the Karnevalclub Kümmeltürken Winterhausen and the Volunteer Fire Brigade Winterhausen are organizing a Weißwurst breakfast with a flea market in the morning, followed by the festive church service and catering in the town center.
Registrations for the flea market should be sent to the KCK in advance. The detailed program will be communicated by the association via its website.
