Wine festival at the historic Maintor in the Wine Triangle
Marktbreit is the southernmost town in the Maindreieck and a market town in the Lower Franconian district of Kitzingen – one of Bavaria's most important wine-growing regions. The historic Maintor, an imposing 16th-century city gate, is the landmark of the baroque old town. At the wine festival »Am Tor bei Wein & Sonnenschein«, winemakers' stalls gather directly under the archway and along the medieval town wall.
Together with the neighboring towns of Frickenhausen am Main and Sommerhausen, Marktbreit forms the »Weindreieck« (Wine Triangle) – a tourist and wine-growing initiative by the three wine-producing towns. At the festival, winemakers from all three communities serve Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus, and Riesling in the classic Bocksbeutel bottle, as well as Federweißer (new wine) during the season.
The festival is part of a series of summer wine evenings at the Maintor – the town organizes several dates between May and October under the motto »Wein & Sonnenschein« (Wine & Sunshine). With the start of the warm season, the May event attracts the first tourists and regular guests to the baroque old town of Marktbreit, where wrought-iron lanterns, old bay windows, and sandstone facades create a particularly romantic setting.
With just under 4,000 inhabitants, Marktbreit is a small but culturally vibrant town on the Main. The town is located on the southernmost loop of the Main River and is easily accessible via the A 7 and A 70 motorways. In the state of Bavaria, district of Lower Franconia, district of Kitzingen, Marktbreit is one of the most visited wine towns in the region.
