Franconian Wine Festival in the historic old town on the last weekend of July
The Weinfest Marktbreit is the most important summer festival in the small Lower Franconian town on the Main river. It is held in the historic old town around the market square, at the Maintor (Main Gate), and in Bahnhofstraße — an architecturally well-preserved ensemble of half-timbered houses, Renaissance, and Rococo buildings. Marktbreit is located in the heart of the Franconian Wine Region, one of Germany's oldest and most renowned wine-growing areas.
Vintners from Marktbreit and the surrounding area serve their wines — primarily Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus, and Riesling from the nearby vineyards — in the traditional Bocksbeutel (goat's bladder) glass. Accompanying this are Franconian specialties: Bratwurst, Schäufele (pork shoulder), Zwiebelplootz (onion cake), Käseschnitten (cheese toast), and sweets. Live music (often brass bands during the day, cover bands and acoustic acts in the evening) creates a festive mood without overshadowing the festival's character as an event for connoisseurs.
With around 4,000 inhabitants, Marktbreit is one of Bavaria's smallest towns with town rights. Its location on the Main river, at the bend of the river opposite the main wine town of Kitzingen, shapes its cityscape. The historic harbor, the 14th-century Maintor tower, and the Rococo town hall are among its sights. Marktbreit is part of the Kitzingen district, which belongs to the Mainfranken region in the federal state of Bavaria.
Unlike the large folk festivals (Volksfeste) in the region, the Weinfest Marktbreit focuses on a cultivated, calm atmosphere. Visitors move freely through the old town, chat casually with vintners, and enjoy the summer evenings by the Main. The Heimatverein Marktbreit e.V. (Marktbreit Heritage Association) has been a central co-organizer for years.
The 2026 edition of the Weinfest Marktbreit will run on Saturday, July 25th, and Sunday, July 26th. As in previous years, the historic old town — market square, Maintor, and adjacent alleys — will transform into an open wine arena. Local vintners will be serving Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus, and Riesling from the surrounding Main river vineyards.
The festival will be accompanied by Franconian specialties at the food stands and a music program featuring brass bands during the day, as well as cover bands and acoustic sets in the evening. The town of Marktbreit and the local heritage association are the organizers.
Free admission. Wines and food are purchased individually at the stands; traditional Bocksbeutel glasses usually require a deposit.
By train to Marktbreit (Würzburg–Treuchtlingen line). By car via the A7 motorway (Marktbreit exit) and the B13 federal road. Parking is available on the outskirts of town; the town center is largely closed to traffic during the festival.
Free admission. Wines and food are purchased individually at the stands.
A multi-day stay is recommended — the region around Marktbreit (Sommerach, Volkach, Kitzingen, Würzburg) offers numerous wineries and sights. Book accommodation well in advance.
