The oldest street festival in the Südpfalz region, held along the historic Jockgrim town wall
For over a quarter of a century, the Hinterstädtelfest has taken place annually on the first weekend of September. The 26th edition in 2026 confirms its status as a traditional festival in the region. What began as a small neighborhood festival has developed into a nationally recognized event that regularly attracts several thousand visitors to Jockgrim's old town.
The Hinterstädtel is the historic center of Jockgrim, a network of narrow alleys, old courtyards, and remnants of the medieval town wall. This extraordinary urban setting is the main attraction of the festival: stalls are set up in old gate entrances, stages are built in courtyards, and the town wall is illuminated in the evenings. Visitors experience an architectural journey through time.
As with all major Palatinate festivals, the Jockgrim clubs are the driving force behind the event. More than a dozen clubs operate stalls in the Hinterstädtel: the sports club, fire department, music club, carnival society, church community, local history society, and youth clubs. Palatinate wine from surrounding vintners, draft beer, Saumagen (pig's stomach stuffed with pork and potatoes), Bratwurst (fried sausage), Flammkuchen (thin crust pizza), and desserts characterize the gastronomic offerings.
The music program is spread across several stages in the courtyards and along sections of the town wall. Cover bands, acoustic sets, DJ programs, and brass music alternate. The short distances within the Hinterstädtel allow visitors to wander through the festival and experience different atmospheres.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the Jockgrim administrative district and participating clubs in late summer. The structure will follow the proven key points of previous years: Opening on Friday evening with a keg tapping ceremony, family program and stage concerts on Saturday, morning pint and festival closing on Sunday.
