Whit Monday at Holtland Mill with demonstrations, café, and tours
Holtland, a district of the municipality of Hesel, is home to one of the traditional mills of southern East Frisia. On Whit Monday, the mill opens its doors as part of the nationally coordinated German Mill Day, making its technology, history, and significance for the regional economy tangible.
Members of the local mill association guide interested guests through the mill, demonstrate the mechanical processes, and explain the importance of wind and water mills for East Frisian history. Demonstrations range from grinding grain to showcasing the braking technology. This turns the mill into a living industrial monument.
A café in the mill's surroundings invites visitors for coffee, homemade cake, and regional specialties. Families will find an accessible program; the format is clearly geared towards a Sunday outing.
The Holtland Mill is part of East Frisia's dense mill network. Those who use Whit Monday for a mill tour can combine several mills in the Leer district in one trip—for example, in Neermoor or Rhauderfehn.
The 2026 edition uses the extended Pentecost weekend for a two-day format. Both days offer guided tours and demonstrations — Whit Monday is the actual nationwide Mill Day.
The exact 2026 program will be published by the mill association in the spring. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
Sunday, May 24 and Whit Monday, May 25, 2026.
Holtland Mill (District of the municipality of Hesel, 26835).
