Schützen- und Krönungsfest Mündelheim — Over Three Centuries of Rhenish Marksmen Tradition
In the south of Duisburg, on the right bank of the Lower Rhine, the St. Sebastianus Schützenbruderschaft Mündelheim-Ehingen 1712 e.V. upholds one of the oldest marksmen traditions in the entire Ruhr area and Lower Rhine region. The fraternity was founded in 1712 — celebrating over 310 years of uninterrupted club history. In 2026, the annual Schützen- und Krönungsfest will take place in September; the exact weekend is traditionally announced by the marksmen's board in early summer. Previous years were September 13-16, 2024, and September 19-22, 2025.
The Double Concept — Whitsun Shooting Plus September Coronation
The special appeal of the Mündelheim marksmen tradition lies in its double format:
- On Whitsun, the actual King's shooting competition (Königsschießen) takes place — a bird shooting competition (Vogelschießen) at the shooting range, determining the royal couple and announcing the winners.
- In September, the grand four-day Coronation Festival follows, where the royal couple determined in the Whitsun shooting is officially crowned and paraded through the district in a festive procession.
This setup gives the fraternity more time to organize the coronation festival and allows for the dignified enthronement of a new royal couple.
Program — Four Days of Rhenish Marksmen Folklore
Based on previous years' programs (especially 2024 and 2025), the coronation festival follows this proven structure:
Friday — Festival Opening
- 6:00 PM Festive parade into the festival tent at Barberstraße
- 7:00 PM Tapping of the first keg (Fassanstich)
- Opening Ball with live music (free admission)
Saturday — Muster and Coronation Ball
- 3:00 PM Muster at the Ehingen boathouse
- 4:15 PM Parade to the festival grounds
- Concert and church service
- 8:00 PM Grand Coronation Ball with live band
Sunday — The Central Festival Day
- 7:00 AM Musical wake-up call through the district
- Morning: Wreath-laying ceremony at the war memorial
- Brunch with honors
- 4:45 PM Festive parade through Mündelheim
- Evening: Live music in the festival tent
Monday — Klompenball for the Children
- 10:00 AM Klompenball — traditional children's event with pea soup and honors
- Festival winding down in the afternoon
The Klompenball is a Lower Rhine specialty: originally a dance in wooden clogs (Klompen), today it's a family event where children are the focus.
Mündelheim — The Rural South of Duisburg
The district of Mündelheim is located in the southernmost part of the large Ruhr city of Duisburg, in the Süd borough. Until the municipal reform of 1929, Mündelheim was an independent municipality — its village-like structure has largely been preserved to this day. With fewer than 4,000 inhabitants, it is one of the smallest districts of Duisburg, situated at the transition to the northern Düsseldorf area and the Lower Rhine. The immediately neighboring district of Ehingen forms a traditional twin community with Mündelheim — both districts share the marksmen's fraternity.
Duisburg — City Between the Rhine and the Ruhr Area
The independent city of Duisburg, with its approximately 500,000 inhabitants, is located at the confluence of the Rhine and Ruhr rivers and is one of Germany's most important industrial and logistics cities. Duisburg-Süd, with its rural districts like Mündelheim, Ehingen, and Hochfeld, offers a deliberate contrast to the industrialized districts in the north — here, Rhenish village traditions with Schützenfeste, St. Martin's Day parades (Martinszüge), and Carnival shape the image.
