Over 310 Years of Tradition — Marksmen's and Coronation Festival in Duisburg South
In the south of Duisburg, on the right bank of the Lower Rhine, the St. Sebastianus Schützenbruderschaft Mündelheim-Ehingen 1712 e.V. upholds one of the oldest marksmen traditions in the entire Ruhr area and Lower Rhine region. The fraternity was founded in 1712 — celebrating over 310 years of uninterrupted club history. In 2026, the annual Schützen- und Krönungsfest will take place in September; the exact weekend is traditionally announced by the marksmen's board in early summer. Previous years were September 13-16, 2024, and September 19-22, 2025.
The special appeal of the Mündelheim marksmen tradition lies in its double format:
This setup gives the fraternity more time to organize the coronation festival and allows for the dignified enthronement of a new royal couple.
Based on previous years' programs (especially 2024 and 2025), the coronation festival follows this proven structure:
The Klompenball is a Lower Rhine specialty: originally a dance in wooden clogs (Klompen), today it's a family event where children are the focus.
The district of Mündelheim is located in the southernmost part of the large Ruhr city of Duisburg, in the Süd borough. Until the municipal reform of 1929, Mündelheim was an independent municipality — its village-like structure has largely been preserved to this day. With fewer than 4,000 inhabitants, it is one of the smallest districts of Duisburg, situated at the transition to the northern Düsseldorf area and the Lower Rhine. The immediately neighboring district of Ehingen forms a traditional twin community with Mündelheim — both districts share the marksmen's fraternity.
The independent city of Duisburg, with its approximately 500,000 inhabitants, is located at the confluence of the Rhine and Ruhr rivers and is one of Germany's most important industrial and logistics cities. Duisburg-Süd, with its rural districts like Mündelheim, Ehingen, and Hochfeld, offers a deliberate contrast to the industrialized districts in the north — here, Rhenish village traditions with Schützenfeste, St. Martin's Day parades (Martinszüge), and Carnival shape the image.
The Mündelheim Schützenfest follows the proven four-day structure of Rhenish fraternities. Friday: Festival opening with parade into the tent, keg tapping, and opening ball. Saturday: Muster at the Ehingen boathouse, parade to the festival grounds, concert, church service, and Coronation Ball. Sunday: Musical wake-up call, wreath-laying, brunch, grand Coronation parade, and evening music. Monday: The traditional Klompenball for the children.
Four days, Friday to Monday (exact date for 2026 to be announced shortly)
Free admission to the festival grounds and tent. Coronation Ball on Saturday evening may require a ticket (club will provide information in advance). Food and drinks available at daily prices in the festival tent.
By car: Take the A59 or B288 to Duisburg-Süd, then follow signs for Mündelheim. By public transport: Bus lines from Duisburg-Süd and Düsseldorf-Hubbelrath to Mündelheim.
Free admission to all festival tent events. Food and drinks available at daily prices in the festival tent. The King's Ball and Coronation Ball may require an entrance ticket (to be announced by the club in advance).
Friday evening parade into the festival tent, Saturday afternoon parade from the boathouse to the festival grounds, Sunday late afternoon grand coronation parade through Mündelheim. All parades are freely accessible along the route.
For an authentic Rhenish marksmen tradition experience, come for the grand coronation parade on Sunday afternoon and the Klompenball on Monday morning. With over 310 years of history, this fraternity preserves an exceptionally deep-rooted tradition.
