Bottrop and its Cultural Centre
The August Everding Cultural Centre in Bottrop is named after August Everding (1928–1999), born in Bottrop — one of Germany's most influential theatre directors (Hamburger Schauspielhaus, Bavarian State Opera). Today, the cultural centre at Böckenhoffstraße 12a serves as Bottrop's community centre for theatre, music, education, and events — and once a year in December, it becomes the hub for the city's Nikolausmarkt.
Nikolausmarkt 2026 — on the 2nd Weekend of Advent
The Bottrop Nikolausmarkt tradition traditionally falls on the 2nd weekend of Advent. In 2026, this will be December 5th/6th, 2026 (Saturday/Sunday) — conveniently right on St. Nicholas Day. The event takes place in the Kulturhof (cultural courtyard) around the cultural centre, extending into adjacent rooms and the B12 gallery.
Programme — Three Parallel Components
The market's concept has been successful for years, combining three elements:
- Classic Christmas Market in the Kulturhof — stalls with mulled wine, cocoa, punch, arts and crafts, gift ideas, regional products, and sweets like gingerbread and cookies
- Children's Area with craft activities and hands-on stations — children can create their own gifts or Advent decorations
- ARTvent Art Market in the B12 Gallery — the Bottrop Art Prize (initiated by Nolin Wischermann and Ralf Opiol) presents works by current prize winners and local artists; sales directly to visitors
August Everding — The Namesake
Born in Bottrop, August Everding was a central figure in post-war German theatre: director of the Münchner Kammerspiele and the Bavarian State Opera, president of the German Theatre Association, founder of the August Everding Theatre Academy in Munich. Bottrop naming its municipal cultural centre after him signifies Everding's strong connection to his hometown. The Nikolausmarkt at the centre thus also serves as a small tribute to cultural memory in the midst of the pre-Christmas season.
Bottrop in the Ruhr Area
Bottrop (approx. 117,000 inhabitants) is one of the northernmost cities in the Ruhr area, bordering Essen to the west and the Münsterland region to the north. It is known for the Halde Beckstraße with its Tetraeder viewing tower (one of the iconic landmarks of the Ruhr area), the former Prosper-Haniel colliery, and the adjacent Movie Park Germany. In December, the city is relatively quiet — the Nikolausmarkt at the cultural centre is one of its few, but very atmospheric, Advent events.
Advent Season in Bottrop
Bottrop offers other smaller Advent events — the Bottrop Christmas Market in the city centre and individual district markets. Those planning to visit the Nikolausmarkt at the cultural centre can ideally combine it with a visit to the city centre market or a trip to the Tetraeder on the Halde Beckstraße — offering a spectacular view over the wintery Ruhr area on clear days.
What Makes the Market Special
The Bottrop Nikolausmarkt is not a tourist event but a classic neighbourhood gathering for the people of Bottrop and their neighbours. Free admission, all cultural activities are free, and it has a family-friendly atmosphere. Anyone looking for an authentic Ruhr area Advent weekend — away from the big markets in Essen or Dortmund — will find this a perfect option.
