Bottrop — A City of Civil Marksmen in the Ruhr Area

Bottrop is an independent city in the northern Ruhr Area (Münster administrative district) with around 117,000 inhabitants. Shaped by mining and structural change, the city has retained a remarkably vibrant civil marksmen's tradition — the Alte Allgemeine Bürgerschützengesellschaft Bottrop, with its long history, is one of the oldest marksmen's associations in the city and is organized into several companies. The 1st Company hosts its own Schützenfest at the Bogenstraße festival grounds.

Alte Allgemeine — Civil Marksmen's Tradition

The Alte Allgemeine Bürgerschützengesellschaft Bottrop is rooted in the civil marksmen's tradition of the Ruhr Area. Unlike the purely Catholic-religious Schützenbruderschaften (marksmen's brotherhoods) of southern North Rhine-Westphalia (Bonn, Cologne, Bergisches Land), the civil marksmen's associations in the Ruhr Area cities primarily emerged from the civic self-image of the industrialization era. Today, the Alte Allgemeine upholds its traditions with discipline and its own dress code — black suits with insignia (sash, plume, marksmen's chain) are required for ceremonial events, while service dress with helmets is worn for parades.

2026 Program — Four Festival Days with Clear Choreography

The 2026 Schützenfest runs from Thursday, June 4th, to Sunday, June 7th, 2026, daily from 3:00 PM to 11:30 PM at the festival grounds at Bogenstraße 62 in Bottrop. The four days follow a precisely defined choreography:

Thursday, June 4th, 2026 — Officers' Evening

• Officers' assembly of the 1st Company
• Tirage / Drawing (internal club matters)
• Joint dinner for the officers

Friday, June 5th, 2026 — Schützenmesse

• Morning: Company breakfast / brunch
• Morning: Schützenmesse in St. Cyriakus Church, Bottrop — the religious heart of the weekend
• Following: Military parade of the 1st Company
• Evening: Start of the festival tent program

Saturday, June 6th, 2026 — Royal Reception and Royal Ball

• Morning: Joint brunch for marksmen and guests
• Afternoon: Reception of the reigning King and Queen with the honor guard
• Evening: Grand Royal Ball with live music and dancing — dress code: black suit with insignia

Sunday, June 7th, 2026 — Bird Shooting and Coronation

• Morning: Joint breakfast
• Morning: Bird shooting at the wooden eagle — the decision for the new king
• Induction of new young marksmen into the company
• Coronation of the new King and election of the new royal couple
• Evening: Closing Ball

Strict Dress Code

What sets the Schützenfest of the Alte Allgemeine Bottrop apart from many other Schützenfeste is the strict dress code: For parades on Friday and Sunday, service dress with helmet is required. For ceremonial events (Royal Ball, Coronation), a black suit with insignia (sash, plume, marksmen's chain) is mandatory. This attention to detail reflects the civil-military self-understanding of the Alte Allgemeine.

St. Cyriakus Church as a Religious Anchor

St. Cyriakus Church, Bottrop — the St. Cyriakus Church in the Boy district — is the religious anchor of the weekend. The Schützenmesse on Friday morning connects the civil marksmen's tradition with its religious roots, making the Schützenfest also a denominational event in Bottrop's church calendar.
