Four days of Schützenfest by the 1st Company of the Alte Allgemeine Bürgerschützengesellschaft Bottrop at the Bogenstraße festival grounds from June 4th to 7th, 2026
Bottrop is an independent city in the northern Ruhr Area (Münster administrative district) with around 117,000 inhabitants. Shaped by mining and structural change, the city has retained a remarkably vibrant civil marksmen's tradition — the Alte Allgemeine Bürgerschützengesellschaft Bottrop, with its long history, is one of the oldest marksmen's associations in the city and is organized into several companies. The 1st Company hosts its own Schützenfest at the Bogenstraße festival grounds.
The Alte Allgemeine Bürgerschützengesellschaft Bottrop is rooted in the civil marksmen's tradition of the Ruhr Area. Unlike the purely Catholic-religious Schützenbruderschaften (marksmen's brotherhoods) of southern North Rhine-Westphalia (Bonn, Cologne, Bergisches Land), the civil marksmen's associations in the Ruhr Area cities primarily emerged from the civic self-image of the industrialization era. Today, the Alte Allgemeine upholds its traditions with discipline and its own dress code — black suits with insignia (sash, plume, marksmen's chain) are required for ceremonial events, while service dress with helmets is worn for parades.
The 2026 Schützenfest runs from Thursday, June 4th, to Sunday, June 7th, 2026, daily from 3:00 PM to 11:30 PM at the festival grounds at Bogenstraße 62 in Bottrop. The four days follow a precisely defined choreography:
What sets the Schützenfest of the Alte Allgemeine Bottrop apart from many other Schützenfeste is the strict dress code: For parades on Friday and Sunday, service dress with helmet is required. For ceremonial events (Royal Ball, Coronation), a black suit with insignia (sash, plume, marksmen's chain) is mandatory. This attention to detail reflects the civil-military self-understanding of the Alte Allgemeine.
St. Cyriakus Church, Bottrop — the St. Cyriakus Church in the Boy district — is the religious anchor of the weekend. The Schützenmesse on Friday morning connects the civil marksmen's tradition with its religious roots, making the Schützenfest also a denominational event in Bottrop's church calendar.
By train: Bottrop Central Station (RB and RE lines from Essen, Dorsten, Wesel), then bus line 257 or 258 to the Bogenstraße stop. By car: A 2 (Bottrop exit) or A 42 (Bottrop-Süd exit) — parking available around the festival grounds on Bogenstraße.
The 2026 edition follows the traditional choreography of Bottrop's civil marksmen's festival: four days of events with a clearly structured program blending religious, military, and social elements. The 1st Company of the Alte Allgemeine organizes the festival independently at its own Bogenstraße festival grounds.
Highlights include the Royal Ball on Saturday evening with the ceremonial enthronement of the royal couple and the bird shooting on Sunday, where the new marksmen's king is determined by shooting down the wooden eagle.
Free admission for most program parts. The Royal Ball and Closing Ball may charge an entrance fee — tickets available at the box office.
