On Site
Neighborhood atmosphere — no mass crowds, mainly residents and regular customers of the Kranoldplatz retailers. Family-friendly, children are welcome. Picnic blankets not necessary, as standing tables are deliberately used. Toilets available at the Petruskirche and in the adjacent cafés.
The Kranoldkiez — Bourgeois Lichterfelde-Ost
Kranoldplatz is the gastronomic and commercial center of the Lichterfelde-Ost district in Steglitz-Zehlendorf. Framed by the Gründerzeit residential buildings of the Kranold and Oberhofer quarters, the square is a lively neighborhood meeting point with its Saturday market and several cafés and restaurants. In December, the square transforms into a small Christmas village for a single Advent evening.
Weihnacht to go — An Advent Evening, Three Strands
The concept is deliberately low-threshold. Unlike the large Berlin Christmas markets, Weihnacht to go is not a showman's market, but a neighborhood initiative by the local businesses. Three strands characterize the evening:
- Commerce with Neighborhood Character: Local retailers extend their opening hours until 7 PM, offer mulled wine and cookies outside their doors, and present their Christmas assortments
- Music in Two Corners: At the Petruskirche, a brass ensemble plays Christmas carols (classic tower-blowing format); in front of the optical shop Blickfang, brass choirs and other musical groups perform
- Neighborhood Encounters: Neighbors meet, new residents get to know their retailers, children marvel at the shop windows
Organizer: Mein LiLa
Behind Weihnacht to go is the local business association Mein LiLa e.V. — an association of business people, restaurateurs, and service providers from Lichterfelde and Lankwitz. The association is committed to promoting social, cultural, and economic interests in both districts. Weihnacht to go is one of their most important annual events, funded by the Steglitz-Zehlendorf Economic Development Agency.
Steglitz-Zehlendorf — The Green South
Steglitz-Zehlendorf is the southwestern district of Berlin and is considered one of the wealthiest and greenest districts in the city. Lichterfelde-Ost is a bourgeois quarter between Lankwitz and Steglitz, characterized by old Gründerzeit buildings, single-family home settlements, and consistently well-kept front gardens. Kranoldplatz is the heart of this neighborhood — a deliberately small, personal square, not an anonymous mass market.
