Three days of the Middle Ages in the wildlife park of northern Saarland
There are few places where you can watch a sword fight and, at the same moment, observe two wild boars snorting in their enclosure. The Naturwildpark Freisen in the northern Saarland is one such place. On its meadows and clearings, MB Historische Eventplanung organizes the three-day Medieval Spring Market Freisen — the season opener for the medieval scene in the greater region between Saarland, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Lorraine.
Over 50 market stalls line the paths through the park. Blacksmiths hammer away at their iron, basket weavers twist willow branches, and leatherworkers craft fine pouches and belts. You'll also find jewelry made of bronze and silver, natural products, mead and beer in clay mugs, suckling pig on a spit, and hearty stews from the cauldron.
Several times a day, reenactment groups perform show fights in full and plate armor. Archers demonstrate their skills and invite children to join in, as do the lance knights with their wooden horse jousting. When the sun sets, fire artists take the stage, accompanied by the sounds of hurdy-gurdy, market bagpipes, and shawms from speakers and the groups' campfires.
Market admission includes access to the Naturwildpark Freisen — observe deer, fallow deer, wild boars, wolves, and lynx up close. This makes the Spring Market not just a medieval event, but also a family outing for May in the St. Wendel district.
Reenactment groups can stay overnight in the adjacent camping area. Regular visitors can find holiday apartments, guesthouses, and campsites in the surrounding area — ideal for spending the entire May weekend in medieval style.
The May weekend in 2026 traditionally coincides with the first major medieval market of the season in the greater region. The market remains open until 11 PM on Friday and Saturday — the evening hours with fire shows, campfires, and market music are usually the most atmospheric experience.
Adults €12, Families (1–2 adults and children 4–13) €25, costumed children 4–13 free, costumed adults €10. Wildlife park included in market admission.
