Mountain and hiking festival on the Finsterberg summit — a Rennsteig tradition for decades
At almost 945 meters above sea level, the Finsterberg is one of the highest mountains in the Thuringian Forest — and is located directly on the Rennsteig, the famous ridge trail that has crossed the low mountain range for centuries. It is precisely on this summit that the Schmiedefeld am Rennsteig Tourist Association celebrates its mountain festival. The concept is consistent: hike in, don't drive. Marked hiking trails lead up to the Finsterberg from the surrounding villages — Schmiedefeld am Rennsteig, Vesser, Stützerbach, Suhl. The hike is part of the festival; it is part of the staging.
At the Finsterbergfest, bratwurst and beer are not the main attractions (although both are available in abundance), but rather the homemade cakes and tarts from the association members. Recipes for Thuringian cream cheese cake, crumble cake, poppy seed stollen, and berry tarts are passed down through generations — and on the festival day, the concentrated baking artistry of the Schmiedefeld bakers gathers on a long cake table on the summit. This is not commerce, but village community identity.
A folk music group plays on the summit during the day. A supporting program of children's games, competitions (log throwing, sawing competition, shooting), and small concert interludes makes the festival a day trip for the whole family. In the late afternoon, the festival slowly winds down — guests hike back to their hometowns or holiday homes.
Schmiedefeld am Rennsteig is now a district of Suhl — an independent city in the south of Thuringia. The village is located directly on the Rennsteig at around 700 meters above sea level and is a classic winter sports and hiking tourism destination. The Tourist Association has been maintaining the tourist infrastructure for decades and organizes several events per year — the Finsterbergfest is the most important of these and becomes the region's big meeting point anew every year.
According to the traditional festival rule of the Schmiedefeld am Rennsteig Tourist Association, the Finsterbergfest takes place on the first Sunday in June — in 2026, this is scheduled for June 7th. Hikers from the Rennsteig villages of Schmiedefeld, Vesser, and Stützerbach, as well as from the city of Suhl, will set off for the Finsterberg summit in the morning.
On the summit, members of the Tourist Association will welcome guests with folk music, a supporting program of children's games, competitions, and concert interludes — and the famous cake buffet with homemade specialties from the Schmiedefeld bakers. Bratwurst, Roster, and draft beer will complement the gastronomic offerings. Free admission.
Exact confirmation of the 2026 date (especially in case of a Pentecost clash): schmiedefeld.de/kalender.
Admission: free. Food and drinks (bratwurst, roster, beer, cakes) offered by association members at usual festival prices.
Sunday, June 14, 2026 (according to festival rules: first Sunday in June, or one week later if Pentecost falls on the first Sunday — in 2026, the first Sunday in June is June 7th, and Whit Sunday is May 24th — so it's scheduled for June 7th; if postponed, June 14th). Please check the current confirmation from the association.
