International Biathlon World Cup in the LOTTO Thüringen ARENA am Rennsteig — up to 25,000 spectators
Oberhof, situated at an altitude of 815 meters in the Thuringian Forest within the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district (Thuringia state), has been one of Germany's most important winter sports centers for decades. National and junior squads train here in biathlon, cross-country skiing, luge, and bobsleigh. The LOTTO Thüringen ARENA am Rennsteig — the biathlon stadium — has been expanded several times and is now one of the most modern biathlon facilities in Europe. With up to 25,000 spectators per day, it offers one of the largest and most acoustically impressive biathlon atmospheres worldwide.
The Biathlon World Cup has been a regular fixture in Oberhof since 1984, and the event is one of the firmly established classics on the international calendar. Athletes from Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Italy, and many other nations appreciate Oberhof for its technically demanding course, the often capricious weather conditions — fog, snowfall, or thaw are possible — and the incomparable atmosphere in the sold-out stadium.
Traditionally, six competitions take place from Thursday to Sunday: Sprint Women and Men, Pursuit Races Women and Men, and Single-Mixed Relay or Mass Start. The exact order of disciplines varies from year to year. Accompanying events include autograph sessions with the world stars, a fan mile in Oberhof, food and drink stalls, as well as side events like concerts and après-ski parties.
Travel by car via the A71 or by train to Oberhof — from there, a shuttle to the ARENA. Tickets traditionally sell out in the summer; only a few remaining standing-room tickets are available at short notice. Anyone who has experienced biathlon live swears by the unique atmosphere at the shooting range and on the final straight before the grandstand.
