One of Thuringia's most exclusive dance events — the 5th Suhler Ballnacht in the Great Hall of the CCS
Gala balls have become rare in Germany. While large ball events are traditional in Vienna, Dresden, and Hamburg, many smaller towns lack suitable formats. The Köhler-Schimmel Dance School filled exactly this gap in 2022 with the first Suhler Ballnacht — and has since made the format an institution. The 5th edition in 2026 marks a small anniversary: the experiment has become an established dance event that is now a firm fixture in the South Thuringian cultural calendar.
The Great Hall of the Congress Centrum Suhl is the city's largest event venue — with a stage, a spacious dance floor, and ample seating in an elegant ambiance. This very hall is transformed into a traditional ballroom for the Ballnacht: festively set tables, subdued lighting, a large dance floor in the center, and a live band on stage. Those who come here arrive in evening wear: tuxedo or suit for gentlemen, long evening gown for ladies.
The musical program includes the classic range of ballroom dancing: Waltz, Tango, Foxtrott, Slow Foxtrott (Standard dances) as well as Cha-Cha-Cha, Rumba, Samba, Jive (Latin American dances). A live band plays these dances at danceable tempos — not purely a concert performance, but explicitly played for dancing. This makes the Ballnacht a true dance evening, not just a show event.
Between the dance rounds, there are show performances: demonstrations by the Köhler-Schimmel Dance School with their advanced students, appearances by regional dance professionals (sometimes with world champion dance couples as guests), and choreographies set to special musical pieces. These show segments lighten up the evening and offer amateur dancers the opportunity to experience professional dance artistry.
The Köhler-Schimmel Dance School has its main branch in Chemnitz with almost 200 years of dance school tradition. In Suhl, it operates a branch and has been organizing the Suhler Ballnacht as one of its most important external events since 2022. The school emphasizes classic dance culture and etiquette — accordingly, the Suhler Ballnacht is one of the few dance events in Thuringia that cultivates this classic gala ball tradition.
The fifth edition of the Suhler Ballnacht transforms the Great Hall of the CCS into a classic ballroom for one evening. Live music, a dance floor, show performances, gala dinner — the event combines everything that makes a classic gala ball.
The evening begins at 7:00 PM with the reception. This is followed by alternating dance rounds (Standard and Latin) and show performances by the Köhler-Schimmel Dance School. An elegant break with a gala buffet or menu service structures the evening, which lasts late into the night. Festive evening wear is requested and is part of the ball experience.
