Spring Awakening in Suhl
Suhl is located in the southern Thuringian Forest — historically known as the "Weapons City", it is also the administrative seat and largest city in South Thuringia. With around 35,000 inhabitants, Suhl is one of the independent cities in Thuringia. The Suhler Frühling has been a central date in the city calendar for years — when the first warm days arrive after a long Thuringian Forest winter, the city centre opens its squares to plants, flowers, garden, and spring culture.
Two Days, Two Squares, One Plant Paradise
The focus is on the Platz der Deutschen Einheit — Suhl's central square — with the Südthüringer Pflanzentage. Here, nurseries, tree nurseries, and perennial producers from all over South Thuringia and beyond present their ranges: rare plants, perennials, shrubs, flower bulbs, herbs, balcony and bedding plants. In parallel, the Südthüringer Automeile stretches along Steinweg with vehicle presentations by local dealers. On Unterer Markt, colourful market activity with arts and crafts, garden accessories, home and garden decorations, and regional specialities ensures additional excitement.
Lecture Programme for Garden Enthusiasts
An informative lecture programme complements the market offerings: tips on spring planting, perennial selection, bee-friendly gardening, pruning courses — topics that appeal to everyone from hobby gardeners to professional perennial collectors. Lectures take place on a stage at the Platz der Deutschen Einheit, admission is free.
Sunday with Open Shops — Entire City Centre
A special feature of the Suhler Frühling is the parallel Sunday with open shops: shops in Suhl's city centre — from fashion boutiques to bookshops — open on Sunday, complementing the market offerings. Visitors to the Suhler Frühling can easily combine plant shopping, lunch, and a shopping spree.
