Traditional Patron Saint's Fair on the First Sunday of September
The Piesbach Kirmes is a so-called Patroziniumskirmes – a festival celebrating the patron saint of the parish church. In Piesbach, one of the four districts of the municipality of Nalbach in the Saarlouis district, this patron is St. John the Baptist. Although his actual feast day falls on June 24th, the Kirmes is traditionally moved to the first Sunday in September, when the weather is more favourable and harvest work is largely completed.
The festival centre is the Kirchberg with the Parish Church of St. John the Baptist, built between 1922 and 1924 – a striking Neo-Romanesque building that has shaped the village's appearance for a hundred years. Right next door is the Kirchberghalle, opened in 1979, where clubs serve food and drinks and invite guests for a cosy get-together in the evening. In good weather, the festival extends to the surrounding square.
Piesbach is famous for its exceptionally dense network of clubs: the amateur theatre group, sports club, music association, fire brigade band, carnival club, and the Litermont Local History and Tourism Association jointly organise a typical Saarland village festival. Sunday traditionally begins with the high mass in the parish church, followed by a morning pint with a brass band, lunch (typical: Schwenkbraten, Schwartemagen, Hausmacher Wurst), and coffee and cake in the afternoon, followed by a dance evening.
If you want to experience the Saarland away from the big folk festivals, this is the place for you. The Piesbach Kirmes has no international artists, no Ferris wheel, no marketing budget – but real village community, volunteer organisation, smoked bratwurst from the local butcher, and beer from Karlsberg. The festival is part of the typical Saarland Kirmes culture, which moves from village to village in the Saarlouis district from May to October.
Combine your Kirmes visit with a hike up the Litermont – the 414 m high legendary mountain in the Schaumberger Land. The ridge path offers a panoramic view of the Hochwald in clear weather. The Litermont legend trail also starts nearby, making the region an attractive destination for excursions.
