Comeback of maritime tradition on the Day of the Seaside Resort Service — High seas island celebrates
Helgoland is located about 60 kilometers off the North Frisian coast in the North Sea and administratively belongs to the Pinneberg district in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. With its characteristic red sandstone rock formation, the high cliff, and the protected lower town by the harbor, the island is one of Northern Germany's most spectacular natural sights. The Inselfest is the most important festival day for the Helgoland community.
After several years of absence, the Inselfest is celebrating its grand comeback in 2026. Historically, the occasion was the Day of the Seaside Resort Service — the day when shipping companies with their Helgoland ships celebrate the island, and the Helgoland population comes together with day guests, summer vacationers, and day-trippers. The Helgoland Tourism Service has relaunched the format in 2026 in close coordination with the Helgoland shipping companies (Cassen Eils, FRS Helgoline) — with extended ship journeys and a packed day program.
The festival starts at 2:00 PM with a reception by the shipping companies at the town hall. Afterward, the island transforms into a colorful festival mile between the harbor, lower town, and upper town:
For day guests, the Inselfest 2026 offers a special feature with the Helgoland XXL format: the shipping companies extend the island time to up to 10 hours — enough time to experience not only the festival grounds but also the island itself (Lange Anna, the cliff, bird sanctuary, dune). The Helgoland XXL tour is a separate offer from the shipping companies, specifically launched for the Inselfest.
The festival day concludes with fireworks at 11:00 PM over the harbor — the classic Inselfest finale, which is particularly dramatically reflected in the North Sea sky from the Helgoland rock massif.
The Inselfest Helgoland 2026 heralds the grand comeback of the tradition. On Sunday, July 12th, the island becomes a colorful festival day — from the reception by the shipping companies at the town hall at 2:00 PM to the fireworks at 11:00 PM.
Helgoland XXL: The shipping companies (FRS Helgoline and Cassen Eils) offer extended island times, so that day guests can also experience the full program.
