Chamber music festival on the Ascension weekend on Germany's only North Sea island
Helgoland is administratively part of the Pinneberg district, but it is around 70 km from the mainland — Germany's only North Sea island. The red rock island has around 1,300 inhabitants and has been an important tourist destination since the 19th century: Heinrich Heine, Heinrich von Stephan, and Hoffmann von Fallersleben spent time here. Today, Helgoland is a nature reserve in the Wadden Sea National Park and belongs to the state of Schleswig-Holstein.
The Hamburg-based Hyperion Trio founded Klanginsel Helgoland in 2016 with the vision of presenting classical chamber music in an extraordinary natural setting. The idea: four days on the Ascension weekend, top-class guests, concerts in the historic St. Nicolai Church (1685–1688) and at various outdoor venues on the island. The festival has since established itself as a permanent fixture in the calendar of North German classical festivals, with trips that sometimes combine multi-day island stays and concert tours.
St. Nicolai Church in Helgoland is the acoustic heart of the festival. With its simple interior and ideal room acoustics, it provides the perfect setting for the evening concerts (7:00 PM and 9:30 PM). During the day, smaller ensembles perform in "Lunchtime Concerts" (10:00 AM) and at various outdoor venues — from the Düne (sandbank) to the Lange Anna (rock formation). The atmosphere is familiar: musicians and audience meet between concerts at the Hummerklippen (lobster cliffs), during a walk across the Düne, or while dining together on the island.
Klanginsel works because it makes the extraordinary seem commonplace: classical music on a North Sea island, complemented by the natural backdrop of the Lange Anna and the Hummerklippen, the silence between concerts, and Helgoland's hospitality. The Hyperion Trio remains the artistic center, but invites guest soloists every year who travel from Hamburg, Berlin, and Munich. Those who have visited Klanginsel once, return — this applies to the audience as well as the musicians.
The 2026 edition of Klanginsel Helgoland takes place from Thursday, May 14th to Sunday, May 17th, 2026 — as every year on the Ascension weekend. The artistic core is the Hyperion Trio, which in 2026 will be joined by Anna Lewis (Viola, founding member of Klanginsel), Felix von Werder (Double Bass, Hamburg State Opera), and Kerstin Ingwersen (Solo Oboe, NDR Radio Philharmonic Orchestra). The evening concerts are held in St. Nicolai Church, with lunchtime concerts and smaller formats at various outdoor venues on the island.
