Helgoland — Punk Rock on the High Seas Island

Helgoland belongs to the Pinneberg district and is Germany's only high seas island, located about 70 km from the mainland. With its red cliff face, the dune as a nature reserve, and its tax-free status, the island is a special place — and since 2010, it has also been the venue for one of Germany's most unusual festivals: Rock 'n' Roll Butterfahrt. The name refers to the old duty-free "Butterfahrten" (butter trips), with which North Germans in the 1970s and 80s bought butter, alcohol, and tobacco cheaply via Helgoland.

The Concept

The festival is organized as a club: tickets are exclusively available in advance to club members. Those who want to come without membership have no chance — no box office, no remaining tickets. This is intentional: the organizers want to limit the size, keep the atmosphere intimate, and at the same time protect the fragile dune and the island's nature reserve. Since its first edition in 2010, the festival has developed into a cult format in the North German punk rock scene.

Program and Atmosphere

The concerts take place in locations on the island — usually several stages with punk rock, rock 'n' roll, psychobilly, and related genres. The bands come from Germany and Europe. Three days of festival, travel usually by Helgoland catamaran from Cuxhaven or Hamburg-Landungsbrücken, overnight stay in the limited hotel capacities on the island or by camping on the dune. Anyone who has been there knows: the mix of island setting, sea air, club structure, and subculture is unique.
