Crafting, building, and paddling competition in the harbour of the North Sea island Spiekeroog
The Spiekeroog Paper Boat Regatta is exactly what its name suggests: a regatta where the boats may only be built from cardboard and paste. What sounds like a quick joke is, in reality, an astonishingly serious construction competition. Teams often work for days on their sloops, on the hull, steering, and buoyancy – and then put their creations to the test of water, wind, and audience on race day.
The race takes place in the harbour of Spiekeroog, at Wüppspoor 4. The course is challenging: turning buoys, narrow passages, and the treacherous tidal climate make the route a challenge even for well-coordinated crews. Paddling is done with short paddles, life jackets are mandatory – because not every cardboard boat survives the first few metres, which regularly leads to spectacular sinkings to the delight of the audience.
A classic island festival develops around the competition. The Kulturstiftung Spiekeroog provides catering with bratwurst, drinks, and sweets; on land, cheers, live commentary, and music accompany the crews. The atmosphere is familial, the competitive spirit friendly – the focus is on creativity and the fun of construction. For children, the regatta offers a rare opportunity to see adults engage in serious silliness.
The choice of cardboard and paste is not only charming but also programmatic: on an island in the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park, the regatta sets a standard for material awareness and recycling fun. After the race, the boats are properly dismantled and disposed of in a compostable or recyclable manner – a quiet contribution to environmental education within the framework of a cheerful island festival.
The 2026 edition continues the format of previous years: teams register in advance, prepare their boats together on the island, followed by races in several heats. The jury judges speed, construction, and originality. Those who reach the finish line – even if paddling alongside their sunken vessel – are cheered by the audience.
Catering stands by the Kulturstiftung Spiekeroog, music on the harbour quay, and a moderated competition flow turn the regatta into an afternoon that extends far beyond the actual competition. Spectators without a boat also quickly find their way around the harbour square.
The exact 2026 programme will be published by the organiser in the summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years.
