Anniversary Celebration for the 200th Anniversary of the North Sea Spa
In 1826, Jacob Andresen Siemens, a Helgoland shipbuilder and visionary, founded the first German seaside resort on Helgoland's Düne. A joint-stock company was established to finance it. With this official recognition, Helgoland became a "Seebad" (seaside resort) — an honour that had far-reaching consequences for the small rocky island in the North Sea: it became a fashionable summer destination for the German bourgeoisie and remained so even after its takeover by the German Reich in 1890.
The anniversary year 2026 marks not only the founding of the seaside resort but also the "Save the Date" for a unique island story: Helgoland was a pirate island, home to the Heligoland Frisians, a British colony, a German fortress island, the target of the largest non-nuclear detonation in human history (1947), a nature reserve — and today it is one of Germany's most impressive travel destinations.
On June 6, 2026, the island will transform into a grand celebration. Three main focuses:
Especially for the anniversary, the three shipping companies FRS Helgoline, Cassen Eils, and Adler & Eils have extended their return departure times to 9:30 PM – 10:00 PM. This makes day trips from Hamburg, Brunsbüttel, Cuxhaven, and Büsum possible without guests missing the main programme.
On Saturday, June 6, 2026, the 200th anniversary of the Nordseeheilbad Helgoland will be celebrated with an all-day programme. The island will transform into a maritime adventure world.
This makes day trips possible even for guests from Hamburg, Cuxhaven, Büsum, and Brunsbüttel.
The street festival is open all day, presumably from 10 AM until late evening. The concert by the Hamburger Goldkehlchen is the musical highlight — the exact stage time will be announced by the municipality of Helgoland shortly before the date. The Börteboot experience with MS HELGOLAND takes place as a special island tour — booking required.
Hamburger Goldkehlchen concert, Börteboot experience with MS HELGOLAND, street festival on Lung Wai, extended ship return journeys.
Street festival free. Börteboot experience is chargeable (booking required). Concert admission not yet confirmed at the time of announcement.
By sea liner: FRS Helgoline from Hamburg, Cassen Eils from Cuxhaven, Adler & Eils from Büsum. Bookings via the shipping companies. By helicopter: Northern Helicopter from Bremerhaven/Cuxhaven, OFD from Büsum.
The street festival and the concert are expected to be freely accessible. The Börteboot experience with MS HELGOLAND will be offered at a special price — booking required.
If possible, plan for an overnight stay — Helgoland in the evening is an experience in itself. Those interested in the Düne and its seals should use the Düne ferry (separate trip).
