91st Offshore Regatta around Heligoland — Whitsun at the North Sea Island
In 2026, the Nordseewoche will take place for the 91st time. First held in 1935, it is one of the oldest offshore regattas in Europe. The history of sailing on the German North Sea coast is closely linked to Heligoland — the island, a geographical waypoint between the Elbe estuary, the Eider, and the Jade, is a natural meeting point for maritime sports events.
The Nordseewoche is not a single regatta, but a whole program of different races:
What sets the Nordseewoche apart from many other regattas is the combination of sporting challenge and maritime island flair. Heligoland, with its approximately 1,300 inhabitants, transforms into a vibrant sports and social meeting point during Whitsun week. During the day, the races take place on the North Sea — in the evening, the harbor fills with returning yachts, the crews meet for the "Helgoländer Hafenrunde" (Heligoland Harbor Round), and celebrate in the Nordseehalle, the island's central festival hall.
Whitsun is traditionally the busiest week of the year on Heligoland. The Nordseewoche brings sailors from Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Scandinavia, and Great Britain to the island. Hotels, guesthouses, and onboard suites are fully booked — those who want to participate or watch should plan well in advance. The program on land — award ceremonies, receptions, evening concerts in the Nordseehalle — is at least as important as the regattas themselves.
The Nordseewoche 2026 runs over the Whitsun weekend from May 22 to May 25, 2026.
The complete announcement with race calendar, class rules, and safety requirements is available at nordseewoche.org. Applications for the main regattas and the Rund Skagen regatta must be submitted by the respective deadline. Spectators are welcome — plan your trip to Heligoland well in advance, as the island is chronically fully booked at Whitsun.
In addition to the races, there will be receptions, award ceremonies, concerts, and parties in the Nordseehalle over the four days — Heligoland's central festival hall. The exact program details for the onshore events will be published by the organizer Regattagemeinschaft Nordseewoche e.V. close to the date. elbregatten.de and volksfeste-in-deutschland.de provide additional background information.
