About Krummhörner Lichtertage

The Krummhörner Lichtertage are among the most atmospheric autumn events in East Frisia. From the start of the autumn holidays until early November, elaborate light installations transform the fishing village of Greetsiel and selected parts of the Krummhörn into a nocturnal light spectacle. Thatched-roof houses, the historic harbour with its crab cutters, the famous twin mills, the medieval church towers, and the typical East Frisian 'Warftendörfer' (villages built on mounds) are bathed in colourful light, enhanced by changing projections, and showcased with subtle illumination. Those who know Greetsiel in summer will discover it anew during the Lichtertage: quieter, more mystical, with an atmosphere that invites long walks along the Sielstraße – warmly wrapped up, with a mug of tea or mulled wine in hand.

An Autumn Spectacle in the East Frisian Lowlands

The Krummhörner Lichtertage utilize the longest autumn nights of the year for a two-week light installation. While other places only gear up for Advent, the Krummhörn offers its visitors an experience in October that marks the transition from golden autumn to the dark season. The concept and execution are in the hands of the Krummhörn-Greetsiel Tourism GmbH, which collaborates with local lighting designers and artists.

Venues along the Krummhörn

The heart of the Lichtertage is Greetsiel – the fishing village, with its compact historic buildings, forms the ideal stage. However, other parts of the Krummhörn are also included:

  • Greetsiel – Sielstraße, harbour, twin mills, church
  • Pilsum – the famous Pilsum lighthouse with a light installation
  • Hinte and other districts – historic 'Warften' (mounds) and churches
  • Wattenmeer dyke – selected sections with pathway lighting and light objects

Light Art, Projections, Atmosphere

The lighting design includes classic coloured illumination of historic buildings, subtle light sculptures in prominent places, occasional video projections on larger wall surfaces, and – a special attraction – the illumination of the crab cutters in Greetsiel harbour. The ships are reflected in colourful hues in the water, making every photo automatically a postcard motif. There is a deliberate avoidance of garish effect lighting: the Lichtertage focus on a warm, contemplative atmosphere rather than a loud light spectacle.

Accompanying Programme

In parallel with the light installations, the Krummhörn's gastronomy offers an extended autumn menu. Several Greetsiel establishments serve mulled wine, punch, and East Frisian tea with rum, and some restaurants have special autumn menus. Guided light walks with explanations of the installations are offered on selected evenings. No day tickets are issued – the Lichtertage are freely accessible.

Krummhörner Lichtertage — edition 2026

The Krummhörner Lichtertage 2026 will run from October 19th to November 1st. For just under two weeks, light installations will transform Greetsiel's town centre, harbour, twin mills, and selected parts of the Krummhörn into a nocturnal spectacle. The lighting begins each day at dusk and lasts until around 10 PM. Admission is free. Guided light walks with explanations of the concept and technology behind the installations will be offered on selected evenings – dates and meeting points are available on the website of Tourismus GmbH Krummhörn-Greetsiel.

The 2026 Lichtertage expand on the concept of previous years by adding extra installation locations. For the first time, an extended lighting display at the Pilsum lighthouse is planned, as well as a new light art installation at Greetsiel harbour.
