Grand Carnival Parade on Tulip Sunday through the historic Eifel town at the foot of the Nürburgring
Adenau, a picturesque Eifel town at the foot of the Nürburgring and seat of the Adenau collective municipality, cultivates a vibrant carnival tradition. The Carnival Parade on Tulip Sunday is the highlight of the season, uniting local carnival societies, schools, clubs, and music bands for a joint performance through the historic city center.
Assembly is at 2:11 PM, a symbolic time in Rhenish carnival. The parade consists of floats, walking groups, dance troupes, music bands, and schools. Elaborately designed themed floats humorously and satirically address local, regional, and supra-regional topics, often including references to the Nürburgring and Eifel motorsport. The floats are accompanied by costumed club members who throw sweets and small gifts into the cheering crowd.
The parade route leads through Adenau's city center with its half-timbered houses, the historic market square, and the late Romanesque parish church of St. Johannes der Täufer. The medieval architecture provides an atmospheric backdrop for the carnival festivities. Families, carnival enthusiasts, and day-trippers crowd the roadside, celebrating with carnival shouts, swaying songs, and plenty of 'Kamelle' (sweets).
The Adenau parade is part of an extensive carnival program in the Ahrweiler district. From Weiberfastnacht (women's carnival day) to Veilchendienstag (Shrove Tuesday), jesters parade through the streets in Bad Breisig, Sinzig, Remagen, Bad Neuenahr, and many other towns. The Tulip Sunday parade in Adenau is one of the most important carnival parades in the High Eifel part of the district and benefits from the central location of the collective municipality.
Eifel carnival cherishes its own customs and differs in some details from the Cologne or Bonn carnival. In Adenau, this distinctiveness is evident in the choice of music, costumes, and float themes. The close connection to the rural region is particularly expressed in the contributions of the village clubs.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in the spring. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
Route marshals, medical services, and traffic management ensure an orderly process. Families will find a good spot in the quieter sections of the route.
Arrival of participating clubs from the Adenau collective municipality and neighboring towns, setup of floats at the assembly point, final preparations.
Welcome of the float builders by the carnival society, distribution of starting numbers, assembly in the designated order.
Opening of the parade by the parade leader, start of movement through the historic city center of Adenau.
Parade through the main street and market squares, passing dense rows of spectators. Throwing of 'Kamelle' and small gifts into the crowd. Music bands from the Eifel play carnival hits and march music.
Dissolution of the parade at the end point, return of the floats to the clubhouses, start of carnival parties.
Carnival parties with live music and DJ sets in local pubs and halls. Continuation of the carnival festivities into the night.
Detailed program 2026 will be published shortly before the date on the websites of the local carnival clubs.
