About Zechenfest

The Zechenfest at the Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the largest free neighbourhood festivals in the Ruhr area. Against the monumental backdrop of the double-shaft winding tower, the Schacht XII site, the Salzlager forecourt, and the coking plant are transformed into a multicultural festival mile with five stages, guided tours through the Ruhr Museum, concerts, dance acts, and a grand fireworks display on Saturday evening. With over 30,000 visitors annually, it is Essen's most important civic festival.

The Black Gold and the White Festival

The Zollverein colliery in Essen, formerly the world's largest hard coal mine, is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site — an iconic industrial architecture that symbolically represents the Ruhr area like no other place. The double-shaft winding tower of Schacht XII, built in 1932, features in every travel guide; the former coking plant area with its endless rows of oven-red sandstone walls is among the most photographed industrial landscapes in Europe. It is precisely on this World Heritage site — in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia — that the Zechenfest takes place annually.

25 Years of World Heritage, 25 Years of Festival

2026 marks the 25th anniversary of the UNESCO World Heritage declaration (inscription in 2001) — and thus also an anniversary of the festival, which has been held on the site since the early 2000s. The Stiftung Zollverein (Zollverein Foundation) uses the festival to showcase the current World Heritage site as a meeting place for the Ruhr area and to make the industrial heritage vividly tangible. More than 30,000 visitors come annually from Essen, the Ruhr area, and beyond.

Five Stages, Many Genres

The festival is generously laid out: Five stages are spread across the extensive Schacht XII site — the main stage in front of the double-shaft winding tower, the Salzlager stage, the Bergorchester platform, the Kokerei stage, and smaller venues for intimate acts. The genres range from Schlager and Pop to Rock and Bergorchester (miner's orchestra music) and 80s hits, world music acts, and dance performances. Each stage has its own audience: families with children on the Salzlager stage, older guests at the Bergorchester, young audiences on the main stage and in the Kokerei area.

Culture, Museum, and Industrial Tours

Unlike purely folk festivals (Volksfeste), the Zechenfest combines the festival experience with the cultural offerings of the World Heritage site. During the festival, free guided tours of the heritage trail are available; the Ruhr Museum and the Portal of Industrial Culture open their doors with free admission. Visitors can switch between concerts and industrial tours — a unique format that distinguishes the Ruhr area from other German festival cities.

Fireworks in Front of the Double-Shaft Tower

The highlight of each edition is the fireworks display on Saturday evening at 9:00 PM, ignited behind the switch house on the Schacht XII site. Synchronized with the music from all five stages, sparks light up in front of the double-shaft winding tower — a sight that shows the Ruhr area at the moment of its strongest visual identity. Thousands gather on the World Heritage site to capture the moment with their smartphones.

Civic Festival with a Community Spirit

Despite its size, the Zechenfest retains its civic festival character. The stalls are mainly run by associations from northern Essen, neighbourhood initiatives, and volunteer groups. International dishes from the many communities of the Ruhr area (Turkish, Syrian, Polish, Italian, Kurdish, Vietnamese) complement the regional specialities. On Sunday at 11 AM, an interreligious gathering takes place — an expression of the religious diversity of the Ruhr area.
