Essen venues of the Ruhrtriennale 2026 at the UNESCO World Heritage Zollverein — PACT Zollverein, Trafohaus, Dance, Performance, and Installation 20.08–20.09.2026
If you want to experience international festival theatre, dance, and performance in unique industrial architecture, the Ruhrtriennale is an absolute must-see on the European festival calendar. Since its founding in 2002 under Belgian Gerard Mortier, the festival has transformed the monumental industrial monuments of the Ruhr region — gasometers, blast furnace halls, engine houses, washhouses — into venues for contemporary top-tier art. From 2024–2026, it is directed by the Dutch-Belgian theatre director Ivo Van Hove as Intendant; 2026 is his final season.
The Ruhrtriennale 2026 runs for exactly one month — from 20 August to 20 September 2026. During these 31 days, 114 events from 31 productions featuring 600 artists from 43 countries will unfold simultaneously in five Ruhr area cities: Bochum, Duisburg, Essen, Dortmund, Gladbeck.
While Bochum hosts the festival headquarters with the Jahrhunderthalle and Duisburg features Marina Abramović at the Kraftzentrale Landschaftspark Nord, the Essen line of the Ruhrtriennale takes place on the most iconic industrial stage in the Ruhr region: the UNESCO World Heritage Zollverein Coal Mine. Closed in 1986, the 'most beautiful colliery in the world' was redesigned by Rem Koolhaas / OMA as a master plan; SANAA, Norman Foster, and David Chipperfield designed other buildings — today, Zollverein is one of Europe's most important industrial heritage sites.
The most important venue in Essen is PACT Zollverein, the Choreographic Centre NRW. Housed in the former washhouse of the Zollverein colliery, PACT remains closely connected to the history of the building and the entire Zollverein site. As an artistic institution, PACT programmes dance, performance, music, and discourse year-round — during the Ruhrtriennale, the building becomes one of the festival's main stages.
To be seen on the Essen stages of the Ruhrtriennale 2026:
For the complete festival programme, it's best to combine Bochum (opening „Rebel Rebel“), Duisburg (Marina Abramović in the Kraftzentrale), and Essen (PACT dance and Urban Arts exhibition).
A Ruhrtriennale visit to Zollverein can be ideally combined with a day trip to the World Heritage Site: the Ruhr Museum in the former coal washing plant, the Red Dot Design Museum in Norman Foster's boiler house architecture, the Doppelbock winding tower (colliery landmark), the Zollverein Art Shaft Quartet, and the industrial nature around the shaft site. The grounds are freely accessible 24/7; guided World Heritage tours can be booked through the Zollverein Foundation.
Approximately 45,000 tickets are available for the Ruhrtriennale 2026. An early bird discount of 10% is valid until 31 May 2026. Price range: approx. €15 (standing room, smaller concerts) to over €120 (premiere main categories). Tickets online via ruhrtriennale.de or by phone +49 234 974833000 (Mon–Fri 10 AM–6 PM).
On festival days, shuttle buses run between the venues in Bochum, Duisburg, Essen, Dortmund, and Gladbeck — allowing you to attend multiple performances without public transport stress. Exact shuttle bus schedules will be available on the Ruhrtriennale website shortly before the festival begins.
The 2026 edition marks Ivo Van Hove's final season as Intendant. At the Essen venues, the festival focuses on PACT Zollverein's programme profile as the Choreographic Centre NRW: contemporary dance, performance, installation. The series „BEYOND UNIVERSE“ at the end of the festival (17–20 September) and the parallel Exhibition of Urban Arts Ruhr in the Trafohaus at PACT Zollverein from 4 to 20 September are particularly significant. Those who appreciate dance and contemporary performance will find the most concentrated programme on the Essen line of the 2026 Triennale. Additionally, the complete festival programme across five cities allows for combinations with Bochum (opening „Rebel Rebel“) and Duisburg (Marina Abramović at the Kraftzentrale Landschaftspark Nord).
