Wanderup in the District of Schleswig-Flensburg
Wanderup is a municipality with just under 1,700 inhabitants in the District of Schleswig-Flensburg, located in the Amt Eggebek between Flensburg and Schleswig. The village is embedded in an agricultural landscape — fields, meadows, small forests, traditional farm structures. The harvest festival has a special significance here: it is not tourist folklore, but an expression of a still vibrant farming tradition.
The Motto: Enjoying Local Delicacies
Under the guiding principle 'Enjoying local delicacies', the harvest festival focuses on regional cuisine. The autumnal buffet consists of specialties that grow, thrive, and are traditionally prepared in Schleswig-Holstein: kale, roast pork, game from the region, pumpkin dishes, fresh bread from the farm, homemade preserves from summer. It is a commitment to short distances and seasonality — a concern that is being re-reflected in many rural communities in Schleswig-Holstein today.
Dans op de Deel — the Second Half of the Evening
After the buffet, the Dans op de Deel follows — the 'dance in the barn floor' in Low German. This tradition goes back to the historic barn floor, which formed the central space between the living and stable areas in North German farmhouses. When the harvest was brought in, the barn floor was cleared and turned into a ballroom — today, the large festival hall in the Westerkrug takes on this role. Dance music in Low German and High German, regional classics, waltzes, polkas — the atmosphere recalls that the harvest festival is more than a meal: it is a social ritual for the end of the year.
The Westerkrug — the Social Living Room
The Westerkrug Wanderup has been the social center of the community for generations. Club celebrations, weddings, anniversaries, and indeed the harvest festival take place here. The address Husumer Straße 26 is in the middle of the village and is a meeting point for the people of Wanderup as well as guests from the surrounding communities — Eggebek, Tarp, Sankelmark.
A Tradition That Carries the Village
The harvest festival is an annual mandatory event in Wanderup's club life — and at the same time an open festival to which visitors are also warmly invited. Anyone who wants to get an impression of how rural Schleswig-Holstein moves between tradition and the present will find it here.
