When a Village Becomes a Christmas Village

Wanderup is a municipality in the district of Schleswig-Flensburg, just under 20 kilometers south of Flensburg. With a good 1,600 inhabitants, it's not a huge town – and that's precisely what gives the Weihnachtsdorf Wanderup its character. Three streets – Tarper Straße, Kamplangerweg, and Poststraße – become the marketplace for three days, the rows of houses are festively decorated, and the village associations are involved on a voluntary basis. While there are larger Christmas markets in the state of Schleswig-Holstein (Lübeck, Kiel, Flensburg), few possess this village authenticity.

Three Days of Advent Season

With opening hours on Friday from 6 PM to 10 PM, Saturday from 11 AM to 10 PM, and Sunday from 11 AM to 6 PM, the Christmas Village is easily accessible – yet small enough to walk through the village in one circuit. In the district of Schleswig-Flensburg, the Wanderup Christmas Village is one of the Advent dates that families from neighboring communities gladly put in their calendars.
