Anniversary service for the 200th anniversary of the Old Island Church Baltrum
The Old Island Church Baltrum was built in 1826 – at a time when the island was not yet a tourist destination, but rather housed a modest community of fishermen, pilots, and beach wardens. With only a few hundred inhabitants, the church was small and compact from the beginning, built as simply as the sparse island landscape dictated. Its whitewashed masonry, characteristic hipped roof, and narrow bell tower have hardly changed in two centuries. This makes it one of the oldest and best-preserved sacred buildings on the East Frisian Islands.
The church was always more than just a place for worship. In an island community where all social life was concentrated on one square kilometer of village area, it became the center of the community: storm surges were mourned together, war losses grieved, shipwreck survivors welcomed, weddings celebrated, and children baptized. For over six generations, the church has accompanied the lives of the islanders – without ever expanding its modest size or modernizing its appearance.
The Pentecost service on May 24, 2026 marks the highlight of the anniversary celebration. Starts at 10 a.m. The service will be festive – with music, likely involving the island choir and/or a brass ensemble, with a special sermon on the history of the building, and with prayers referencing two centuries of island community. Afterwards, the church community invites you to the East Frisian tea table – one of the most characteristic traditions of East Frisian culture – with tea, Kluntje (rock candy), cream, Stuten (sweet bread), cake, and pastries.
The 2026 anniversary service is part of a broader anniversary celebration for the 200th anniversary of the island church, which will be accompanied by further activities, concerts, and an exhibition throughout 2026. The Evangelical Lutheran Church Community of Baltrum is responsible.
