Spring family event at the historic citadel by the Initiative Zitadelle Mainz e.V.
The Zitadelle Mainz (Mainz Citadel) on Jakobsberg is one of the most impressive surviving fortress complexes in Central Europe. Its bastions were built in the 17th century according to plans by electoral fortress master builders and still shape the southern edge of Mainz's old town today. In the inner courtyard is the Roman Drusus Monument, one of the oldest surviving structures north of the Alps. The Initiative Zitadelle Mainz e.V. has been committed to the care, research, and cultural use of this heritage for years and organizes several public days throughout the year.
Idyll im April marks the spring kickoff of this series. On a Sunday afternoon in April, gates, casemates, and bastions open to a broad audience. History tours explain the military-historical significance of the complex, its transformation from an electoral garrison to a Prussian fortress and finally to civilian administrative use. Restorers, archaeologists, and volunteers report on ongoing projects — wall restoration, vegetation management, geophysical surveys.
The program explicitly appeals to families: children can try historical games, participate in a scavenger hunt, or visit small craft activities. Local vendors provide drinks and food. The character is deliberately understated, and the event name says it all: an idyllic afternoon in a breathtaking setting, away from the urban hustle and bustle, with a view over the Rhine plain.
Those who know the citadel only as a hiking destination or as the venue for the Open Ohr Festival will get to know it in its historical depth on this afternoon.
Idyll im April 2026 is a one-day format with a family-friendly character. The 2026 program will be published by the organizer in the spring. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years: admission from 2 PM with continuous short tours of the bastions, parallel children's program with historical games, a small musical accompaniment in the inner courtyard from the late afternoon. The event ends around 6 PM. Food and drinks are provided by local vendors and the association.
The exact program, including tour topics and hands-on activities, will be announced on the website of the Initiative Zitadelle Mainz e.V.
